It depends how you grade it.

What I do know is UofC's top CS students outperformed CMU's top CS students in my era in some of the toughest problem solving competitions out there.

What I do know is having a CS degree from UofC has treated me very, very well. I cracked the six figure mark (without living a city with high cost of living, which inflates salaries) 4 years out of school. Trash it all you want, because clearly you're talking out of your ass.

No, I've helped you a couple times with basic programming problems.

You helped me once to track down a segfault in a C program--I appreciate that, by the way. It was very kind of you.

This whole discussion of school pedigree is sad and pathetic.

            It's because I'm a good person.

I actually agree. School pedigree is retarded. I've argued this quite a bit recently, always against the people who paid a lot of money to get people to think otherwise.

Someone who went to UNBC is making cracks about program reputation?
Truth hurts. I applied to U of C, was accepted, but U of A and UBC offered me scholarships, so I went to UBC instead. I was actually offered 4 year full ride to UNBC - but turned it down because I wanted to do Physics, and that program at UNBC wasn't offered.

3/4 of my credits are from UBC, btw, so I am a UBC alumni.

I just find it funny that you crap all over other people's schools and you think that U of C is some ivory tower. No, it's not, really.

If UBC has to pay people to go there whom U of C isn't willing to throw money at that doesn't make UBC look good.

Where the **** did I ever say UofC is some ivory tower?

I applied to Waterloo (which is far better than UBC), UofA, and UofC and was accepted at all of them. I went to UofC, which was lower in ranking according to all of the stupid guides. I went because I knew it didn't matter. And it really didn't.

UofC isn't known for its pedigree and reputation, but its CS department in particular is a lot better than most people would know.

It's not me playing the ivory-tower university pedigree card here -- it's you, HC, and Jaguar. I've repeatedly stated on Apolyton that where you get your degree doesn't matter once you get your job and prove you know your ****. I'm a supervisor for 35 devs now, 5 or so which have PhDs, a dozen or so with Masters degrees, and a lot of people with degrees from a lot of "better" schools. Once you get your job, no one gives a **** where your degree comes from. People care that you know your ****.

I still have that letter, btw. I have a laugh at it these days - but back then they didn't think I was enough of a jock to qualify for a scholarship. UBC paid for my first year and U of A, offered the same.

And there you go, HC. Even Canada doesn't hold U of C in high regard.

I'm as far as you can get from being a jock, and I got scholarships. The only people I know at UofC that got scholarships for sports were enrolled in Kinesiology. If you weren't offered a scholarship from UofC, it's because you didn't qualify for one. And it's not because you weren't a jock. It's likely because you were stupid.

UBC probably had a quota for special needs students. It's a very liberal school, you know.

The Prime Minister of Canada went to UofC, and frankly he's a more intelligent man than Romney or Obama.

So, I want to be clear here--I am sure Asher got a perfectly good CS degree from U Calgary. I'm sure that with enough effort, you can get a good CS education there, perhaps even as good as one that you could get here at CMU. Certainly, someone who works hard at Calgary would get a better education that someone who doesn't work hard at CMU.

Jaguar brought up the mid tier school thing, take it up with him

Grad school is another matter entirely, of course.

To be clear, I didn't work hard at all in university. People who have to work hard at university are people who aren't intuitive enough to self-teach.

And I didn't qualify for one because they were looking for jocks. They also didn't have a good Physics program. UBC and U of A have very good physics programs, UBC's as good as you'll find east of Toronto.

Like HC said, I'm sure you can get a good education of U of C - but you shouldn't be looking down on folks who have degrees from UNBC. You've got no cause to boast.
