Like HC said, I'm sure you can get a good education of U of C - but you shouldn't be looking down on folks who have degrees from UNBC. You've got no cause to boast.
UNBC is definitely not in the same league. It's not a research university.

There are two tiers of universities in Canada:
    Research Universities
    "Primarily Undergraduate" universities
Then right below them are Community Colleges

Hell, look at its wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Univers...itish_Columbia

Was essentially opened in 1995, has 3400 undergrads spread across various campuses in the metropolises of Prince George, Prince Rupert, Terrace, Quesnel, and Fort St. John.

UNBC is ranked third in the nation now for what they offer which is mostly undergrad. U of C - is ranked 9th in their category. So, since we're talking about undergrad degrees - U of C is probably worse than UNBC if they were ranked on the same scale.

You are a ****ing idiot, Ben.

UNBC is ranked in another category than UofC because it is, quite literally, not in the same league as the other schools. Its contemporary are other pseudo community-college "universities" largely focusing on tiny regions of Canada.

The UofC's category is the top tier in Canada of research universities.

The UofC's profs are recognized academics in their fields, pulling in tons of money to perform research. UNBC's "profs" are largely instructors who went to school and now teach what they had learned. It's a different kind of education.

That's why the UofC's notable CS alumni include James Gosling (inventor of Java), Theo de Raadt (if you don't know who he is you're not a computer scientist), and Gary Kovacs (head of Mozilla/Firefox). UNBC's notable alumni include...some member of parliament who took radio broadcasting studies?

It doesn't have nor does it offer many graduate programs. It focusses on undergrads. Now, since you haven't taken advantage of a graduate program at U of C - if we are comparing undergrad degrees why would it make sense to give U of C credit for what UNBC doesn't even do.

The UofC's category is the top tier in Canada of research universities.
Uhh, no. The top tier is McGill, Toronto and UBC. U of C is a good university but not 'top tier' by any means.

You can't even comprehend what I'm writing. That's how bad UNBC is.

UNBC sounds like a ****ty regional commuter school.

Face the facts - U of C is a middle tier university just like HC said. It's Alberta State.

RIT isn't a research university and thank god for that. I don't want my tuition money going to research, I want it going to paying my professors to ****ing teach me stuff.

I said "top tier" in that it is in MacLean's top category for schools. The top tier, if you will.

It goes Medical/Research --> "Comprehensive" --> "Primarily Undergraduate"

UNBC is in the last, UofC the first.

UNBC sounds like a ****ty regional commuter school.
It's only been around since 1990. The top university in it's category has about twice the endowment. The top university in the next step up has an endowment of 200 million or so, about 3x UNBC. In 20 years they've gone from nothing to about 70 million or so. When it opened, it was considered the worst in it's category, but it's steadily moved up over the years.

UBC, which is one of the Canadian Ivies has an endowment of about twice that of U of C. So unless U of C is twice as efficient (which isn't the case), UBC is well ahead of them. By endowment - UBC has about 1 billion and the University of Toronto has 1.5 billion dollars.

To give you an idea of sizes, the largest (by far), university in Canada is slightly smaller than Penn State in terms of endowment.

Tuition isn't used to pay for research. Research funding comes from elsewhere (governments, companies, etc). The UofC gets ~$350M every year for such "sponsored research".

The difference is in the quality of the instructors. At Research Universities, your professor is guy working to improve the state of the art of the field. He's perhaps the expert in his field. At non-research universities, your "professor" is someone who regurgitates knowledge.

At research universities your professor does his research while TAs actually do the teaching.

At RIT our professors are expected to be teachers first. If they suck at teaching they get fired. They don't get held on because they're good at research but bad at teaching.

A tenured professor I had last quarter told me that tenure here doesn't actually prevent you from getting fired. It just means you can't get fired based on stuff you publish.

What the ****? UBC is NOTHING like an Ivy League School.

UBC has twice the student enrollment and twice the endowment. Why is that a surprise, and more importantly why the **** is it relevant?

The UofC's endowment is over 7x higher than UNBC's. Clearly it is 7x better. Amiright?

I've never had a TA teach a class. Ever.

U of C is also 25 years older. Where was U of C back in 1980?
