This is a key point. Not only that but the NHS got accused by people in the US of having Death Panels just for having procedures in place to put limits on treatments based on their efficiency. Which surely should be a key part of any health system.

Because of the way health insurance works here, as a means of financing healthcare, like a credit card for medical bills, instead of actual risk mitigation--it separates the consumer from market forces. Hence why it cannot be properly described as private insurance. It's not really insurance.

Medicare is even worse, where they will pay for almost anything regardless of price or efficacy.

Stephen Douglas ran on Asher's platform of not "forcing others to fellate your beliefs"--self-determination of states. Republicans ran on a platform of stopping slavery where they could, although the radical wing (which turned out to be most of them once the war ended) wanted to abolish it entirely.
