  • Also, I'm playing on Normal and my team of all-colonels is pwning everything in sight. The difference between normal and classic is like the difference between getting a massage at a resort spa and getting anally raped by your prison cellmate.

    • I'd just skip a terror mission that early.

      • Is it worth upgrading a light plasma rifle to a plasma rifle?

          • I equip my people with light plasma rifles on the council misions because those are always filled with thin men. Their low HP means accuracy is more important than damage.

Oh yes I can, it was in original X-Com.
Haha, yes it's been 18 years but I still remember when I lost Werner Meadrow.

This game sounds awesome, but I'd probably have to get a divorce to play it.

At least it's bringing back memories of the original.

Christ, don't even get me started on the goddamned first month terror mission, when I'm sending, at best, a Sgt., maybe a Sq., and two rookies, all with standard arms, up against plasma rifle toting floaters and a couple of goddamned chryssalids and whatever zombie horrors they manage to spawn before I find them.

                ****ing Classic, man. God DAMN.
With the Chrysalids you really gotta hang back and let them come to you. A rocket to the face is always the best call for them. I had a terror mission last night where I killed 2 of them with 1 rocket blast but there was a 3rd ******* hiding in a building. I had to holotarget with my heavy, toss a grenade, shoot with a shotgun, then toss another grenade. It was epic.

                • A rocket to the face only works if you've got a heavy to fire the rocket; on my last attempt, my heavy was in sick bay when the terror happened.

I just compulsively go to all the offered missions; maybe I need to learn to take the panic hit rather than get my ass killed.

                  • My squad consists of a sniper, two heavies, two assault (one shotgun and one rifle), and one support. I'm wondering how everyone else composes their squad. I'm also wondering if it would be better to replace one of the assaults with a heavy--two rockets and two grenades is great.

Also, I kind of wish there was a defense scenario mission, where you have to guard the objective against hordes of bad guys. I guess that might not involve much tactics though...just set your dudes to overwatch on every turn.

                    • As I believe I said earlier, the problem you're all having is inexperienced people. If you can get a full team of 5 sergeants before losing any countries you should be set.

Also, get the squad size upgrades as soon as they are available. Period.

I try and keep two good snipers, they give you a great coverage while you're moving everyone else. Twin snipers at captain or above is a beautiful thing.

                        Original had base defence.

This bit is very true. Especially for terror missions.

                        • 5 sergeants? I've barely gotten to one. I don't even know how I *could* get 5 sergeants before losing any countries. I almost inevitably have to lose a country in the first couple of months because of the initial choice ... one of the two countries I don't take (if not both) leave in the first council update.

Once I finally get off the ground, I usually roll with just one heavy, and either two snipers (see below) or two support (so many medpacks--great for the critically wounded and the poisoned) to go with the two assault (one or both of whom carry arc throwers to take the alien weaponry). Granted, this was on my "normal" playthrough, I may find a different strategy is required for "classic". I can easily imagine two heavies, both with suppession and holo-targeting being a boon on Classic.

The thing that really got me rolling, when I think about it, is capturing all the alien weaponry and researching the plasma weapons. Both so my squad had the firepower, but also because France (I think) requested a few plasma rifles (I think) and paid over $1,100 for it.

After that, I had no concerns about money at all.

                            • I think the optimal squad is 1 sniper 1 heavy 2 support 2 assault with assault and support levelled on opposite lines. Having lots of medkits is good but having medkits and smoke grenades is better. Smoke grenades are crucial to preventing men from being wounded and keeping them in the fight batlle after battle.
