I have to say 3 hours in I fully agree with the OP on how amazing this is. Simply the fact that I sucked initially, figured out what I was doing wrong, fixed it, and now am having difficulty but winning; and that 'what I was doing wrong' was entirely logical (ie, not taking it slow enough and rushing too far in too quickly). Very cool.<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

This is a spectacularly good game.Jon Miller: MikeH speaks the truth

Jesus christ this game is unforgiving. I definitely didn't learn my lesson about not moving in too fast, lost a full set of corporals in my first abduction mission then lost my sergeant and her entire team the next. I know it's my fault for playing on Ironman but still... ouch. I have no idea how I'm ever going to get a Major at this rateLieutenant is probably as good as I can hope for.
I have to say money management is really hard for me. I don't really have a good understanding of what to build/buy... the research I think I can handle, but in terms of buying buildings versus more soldiers versus airplanes, I am really not sure.<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

I'm of a few different minds for starting location:
North America's special bonus sucks, but the US satellite coverage is nice.
South America's special bonus is crazy good, especially early on, and can lead to a pretty well-armed squad early; but it seems wasteful since there are only two countries
Africa's special bonus is also crazy good, and lasts throughout the game.
Asia's is not as good, but still pretty handy; the only problem is that you gotta lay out a lot of cash for the OTS and Foundry to get any benefit, and it takes a while to get enough cashflow and power to make it happen
Europe's seems utterly useless to me."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

North America's money early on is great. I love asia too because you can easily get to 10 engineers for an additional uplink by the end of march plus the foundry bonus is really nice."I hope I get to punch you in the face one day" - MRT144, Imran Siddiqui

I had a game that was going great until I didnt have enough alloys to build at least one plasma weapon. Soon the enemies became too tough and I died horribly."I hope I get to punch you in the face one day" - MRT144, Imran Siddiqui

I'm dying horribly in the first three missions! ****ing sectoids and thin men with their ****ing plasma pistols.
Christ, don't even get me started on the goddamned first month terror mission, when I'm sending, at best, a Sgt., maybe a Sq., and two rookies, all with standard arms, up against plasma rifle toting floaters and a couple of goddamned chryssalids and whatever zombie horrors they manage to spawn before I find them.
