  • So you admit to being a misogynist.
Yes, I want to get married and I want to get a good job so that my wife can stay at home and raise our kids. It's far more efficient than a two-income household. I'd work two jobs to see that happen.

Is it misogynist to want a wife to stay home, eat good food, sit on our couch while I go out in the wee hours to work and fight with traffic?

    Maybe ask them?

I don't have anything against smart, educated women. I prefer them, which is why I date rather infrequently. You can find lots of smart, educated women who do not want children. You can find lots that want children but aren't the other two. The combination? I've met some really wonderful ladies who are all three, but they are tough to find and in high demand when they are. So if you do meet them, chances are they already have a boyfriend who's with them for the same reason that I want to be with them.

What would you do if your wife was smarter than you and better-paid than you?

Not to mention that this comes with all sorts of nasty side effects, including an uptick in suicides by the unemployed.

There are very few things that are worth this sort of human cost, and maintaining a generally-conservative demeanor is not one of them.
But the thing is that we don't even know if we would get more employment with inflation. We used to think you always did, but now we know that we just don't know. If we were to print so much money that it caused significant inflation but didn't lower the unemployment rate any we would be in a real crisis. This is why the fed tends to make small, safe moves.

Well, what would the logical efficiency ratio suggest? Me staying at home, looking after the kids, cooking, etc?

I have done it before. I suck at cleaning though, but I'm good with kids (why else am I teaching, etc). If she's up for it, I'd do it.

          • Ben's post is one of the creepiest things I've ever read. Jesus christ. I feel like I'm rereading those old anti-suffragist editorials we discussed in high school US history.

I was just (jokingly) pointing out that one of the things you wanted was a wife. All this is you.

So it sounds like your wanting your future wife to stay at home is mostly just a troll.

                          • Seems like two income household is more efficient if
                            income potential(wife) > cost(daycare)

Even if you dismiss the value daycare adds - which is not insignificant; not only does your kid get socialized better earlier on, but he gets all the sicknesses at 1 and 2 instead of 5 and 6, missing a lot less school; and daycare, if you choose a good one, probably teaches your kid better than a stay at home mother does (as the daycare teacher doesn't have to cook, clean, etc., and has access to a lot of teaching materials that are much cheaper to obtain for 12 than for 1, as well as a degree in early childhood education that helps).

I'd always prefer a good daycare to raising my kid(s) at home. The difference is really telling when you look at kids in kindergarten or first grade. Even seeing kids coming into daycare at 1 year old (mine just entered the next older classroom, and a lot of kids seem to enter daycare at 1), there's a huge gap - in socialization, in learning, in being able to cope with new situations.

Again, I'm looking at dollar value here.

1, I dispute that daycare provides better socialization than homeschool. I teach and work with homeschool kids and have worked with them in the past. They tend to be better behaved, further along in their school, etc.

2, If I'm smart enough to teach kids well off basic materials, why would my children do without if my wife and I were teaching them? 2 really doesn't apply to me. If there's something between the two of us that we were not very good with, we can always get outside help.

Anyways, we aren't going to agree with this. A good daycare is extremely expensive, and requires two fairly high income earners. That's not really very efficient is it? Whereas if you're homeschooling, you don't need nearly as much money to provide a solid education for your child.
