It's up to the company. Regulation in the US isn't that bad.

Have you ever filled out an I-9? Some companies let you do this at home and thus you never present your ID, but the practice is totally illegal.

          I don't think so.

If I did, it would have been long ago (and most periods of employment in the US were with universities which might have different rules...).

Wow. Ok. Every job I've applied for here has required the I-9, etc.

I really don't believe this. I've worked a few jobs and even hired people. Photo ID is absolutely necessary.

                Then what about background checks?

Even if you somehow got the job without an ID, you need an ID to cash your paycheck or to open a bank account to deposit it.

And frankly, saying that people may have had an ID in the past that they used to get their job/bank account but their ID is lost or expired and they now don't have one and can't get/afford one doesn't seem realistic to me. Anyone who can maintain a bank account and job is capable of picking up a photo ID.

If they lose their job, they need a photo ID to receive welfare benefits. They don't need a photo ID to receive unemployment benefits, though, assuming they're already in the system. They'll get that debit-style card they can use at ATM's. They'll need a new ID to get a new job, though.

Voter registration cards are valid for I-9s in place of photo ID. Go figure. You still need an ID to function in society, and anybody who doesn't have one should really do themselves a favor and go get one. If the state is handing them out free (which they must do for these laws to be legal), then that's even better.
                  John Brown did nothing wrong.

It doesn't vibe with liberals' (like Bill Maher) racist slave-owner fantasies.

Bill Maher is a misogynist, it should be unsurprising that he's racist, too.

Strange, in the land of the free you need identity cards resembling DDR to get a job while here in commie Denmark all I need to do is to say what my personal number (equal to social sequrity number) to get a job

I'm a bit curious - what kind of databases are available for such ?
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

I have no vaguely relevant 'Meanwhile in Denver' picture to post

**** it. I'll use this one again:
