Because most of us have no interest in restarting the cold war, because we actually remember just how totally **** it was. Here's a clue for you young chicken-hawk types, it wasn't like living through an extended version of Top Gun.

Jesus, I really thought that third grade 'You're either with us, or against us' nonsense had gone away with George W.

It's the strangest thing. You keep insulting them and they still don't do **** for you.

There are so many mysteries in this world.

Russia was the U.S.’s 31st largest export market and the 14th largest exporter to the U.S. in 2011. Russia accounted for 1.16% of total U.S. trade, making it our 20th largest trading partner overall. U.S. exports to Russia were $8.3 billion, the highest since 2008, and a 39% increase from 2010. This is more than double the growth rate for overall U.S. exports worldwide which were up only 16%. Russian exports to the U.S. were $35 billion, up 21% from 2010.

U.S. accumulated investment in Russia is approximately $10 billion. According to Russian data, the U.S. is Russia’s 10th largest foreign investor.

As long as Putin still sees the world in a Cold War mentality, which he does, we may as well treat Russia that way.

And no one sees the world in the 80s-style nuclear-war-over-the-horizon way, if that's what you mean. Just geopolitical adversaries, not guns to each other's heads.

Putin is an ******* but the situation is vastly different from the cold war.

That won't go away if we play a harder line on them, Putin needs that foreign investment. I honestly think we're more likely to get Russia to do stuff for us if we play hardball than softball.

Same with Iran and all the other guys Obama has claimed to want to press the "reset button" on our relationships with.

Yeah, Putin responds well to that kind of thing doesn't he.

                    Absolutely.

Unless, of course, you're interested in appealing to the many, many millions of Russians who aren't Putin.

Yeah, that's the way to get Russia to cooperate. Insult them and belittle them. They'll fall right in line. They're not a prideful nation or anything.

Who cares? The polish people care more about missile defense systems Obama cancelled than what US unions do. I can promise you they care approximately not at all about the latter.

The polls in israel speak a different story--Obama has about 5% approval there, maybe less. They play up their buddy-buddy relationship with Obama (that it is an open secret doesn't really exist) so that Obama still feels obligated to give them some support.

That would indeed be bad, shame it's not actually true.
