West would have more influence as a percentage, but Ontario would have 50 percent plus one. Right now, with Quebec out of the picture, Ontario needs the West and the West needs Ontario to get to 50 percent plus one.

No. A majority has been formed in the west and Quebec (Mulroney, '84). With Quebec, at least there is a mathimatical possibility of forming a government without Ontario East of the lakehead (or thereabouts). Without Quebec, Ontario owns the federal government, lock, stock, and barrel.

We have confronted the reality of it being possible. It is accepted by the SCOC and the Canadian government that it could be done.

The SCOC said something to the effect that they could negotiate (it would be a modification of the Constitution). The federal government has spelled out terms that would be acccepted to begin the process (clear majority on a clear question. 50% + 1 on an obfuscating question would be rejected (probably)).




Probably, right up until the point where the US government (and NATO) decided to pick a side in a serious way.

Half the airforce's combat aircraft are stationed in Quebec (along with a large number of francophones, I am imagining). Nominally, one third of the effective reg force combat infantry and a good portion of the mechanised are French formations (stationed in Quebec). Navy would not be relevant, but they would have virtually none.

Seems like you could pretty easily blockade Quebec, then. I guess you'd need to get the US on board with that, though.

If they can choose to remain Canadian, you are de facto recognizing that they can choose not to.

Why would the indians want to leave Canada? They'd lose access to the federal gravy train.

But - in theory - they would control for themselves vast expanses of land.

It'd be safer for Canada to transfer federal obligations towards natives to Quebec rather than to open the can of worms of their own sovereign status.

You can't transfer/offload agreements to other parties without consent of all involved.
