Oh, also, semi-automatic rifles are totally legal in Canada and lots of people do have those. You just can't have magazines with more than 5 rounds. Those are even more easily acquired and smuggled than guns, and you could even make it by hand yourself out of sheet metal and a legal magazine with little effort. To make it concealable, just add a folding stock and saw down the barrel.

Yes, because everyone is a gunsmith in Canada or has access to machine tools to do the job.

I could do that to my Ruger and I'm not a gunsmith. Take off the stock, put on a new one, get a metal saw and cut the barrel. It's blowback operated so there isn't even a gas system to worry about.

I miss those threads we used to have 10 years or so back where people would declare, in all seriousness, that the UK's ban on handguns caused homicide rates to rise.

They were fun. For me, anyway.

Whether or not that's true has no bearing on the United States, for this reason: we have a ****load of guns, to a degree Britain never has. Even if gun control were very effective (and we have strong evidence that it is not), it would be decades before the availability of guns significantly dropped for criminals.

I like that attitude. "It might be tricky and take a long time, so let's not bother starting". Slacker culture FTW.

It obviously worked so well with the drug war.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Do you have any idea how long guns last? There are guns still in frequent use that are 60 years old. Newer guns last even longer. And there's not a lot of evidence that gun control even does any good. Plus there are a number of common, legal uses for firearms.

There's plenty. The problem is Americans choose not to believe it, instead throwing out rhetoric like "well, if you had as many darkies as we have, you'd have higher murder rates with guns too!"

FTFY. 100 year-old-guns still in use are also not unheard of. Hell, the M1911 design is 101 years old now.

The crime rate in the United States is not driven by gun ownership. Moreover, any gains we could get by banning guns would be offset by the harm inflicted to the legal owners, who have them for the legitimate purposes of hunting, self defense, collecting, and sport.

Criminals use cars to commit crimes. Cars are useful so we don't ban them. Same goes for guns.

Also, hasn't anyone here seen Red Dawn? Private guns are crucial to repelling communist invasions.

Clearly keeping things as they are now isn't working. No "normal citizen" pulled out his sidearm and killed the criminal.
