$7 for a game that's been out for less than two years?

I see NYE's point. There's two types of ideas going on. One, that CiV should be judged based on it's independent merits. IE, is it a good game? Would you play it or buy it based on the gameplay experience in itself. In this, it would be best to have as little experience with other games as possible. There are some games that fit a niche when they come out and are blockbusters, and others, that are eventually recognised as classics.

I guess Star Control 2 is the best example. One of the greatest PC games of all time - never sold well in release. Then you have something like the NES version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which sold 4 million copies!

In other words, someone who is completely incompetent and unversed in strategy games might conclude Civ 5 is a good game. We already knew this from the thread starter. Thanks.

What an amazing non sequitur. How do you live with yourself?

Sometimes reviewers who pan a game at the outset get it wrong. One of the reasons they do so is because they are comparing the game to other releases which are considered superior. Just because the game isn't Civ2, (top 4 of PC games alltime), doesn't mean that it necessarily sucks.

A good movie example would be 'In Search of Spock", which I think is the second best of the TOS, but is often listed as 4th or 5th. It's not Wrath of Khan, but then who is?

Is it possible that CiV could be a decent game and still not as good as stellar releases like cIV and Civ2?

Ben agrees with you. NYE, you might as well admit you're wrong.

Deus Ex is also $7 right now and it came out last year. Fear 3 is $4.99

It's the Steam Summer Sale. Civ V is 75% off.

Stop being an idiot. It's not bargain binned yet.

$7 for the game isn't a bargain? I thought you were trying to claim that Civ V didn't suck?

                      • IT'S A STEAM SALE!!!! Do you know what that is?!

It's not regular price for $7 like some bargain game. It's a special promotional offer. Steam sells like all their games for 50-90% off!

Right now you can get Crysis 2 that came out only a couple months ago bundled with Crysis 1 and the Crysis 1 expansion pack for $17.49.

That is the point of these Steam sales. They sell the games at incredibly deflated prices to entice a lot of purchases.

It's not regular price. It's on sale.

Civilization V Game of the Year edition regular price is $49.99

God are you a stupid ****. You keep taking contrarian positions and always looking like a ****** when doing it.

                        • This might blow your mind, but you do realize "sale" is a marketing euphemism for "the game is worth $7" right?

It won't be worth $7 after today. Or at least you won't be able to buy it for $7

If I'm the stupid one why are you the one who spent $50 on a game that's only worth $7?

Okay. But right now the game is worth $7.

What I think you are using your elite business background to argue is that Valve is temporarily pricing some games at a loss to encourage adoption of its sales and distribution platform, which is probably true.

                                The game's still worth $7.
