No. If you have no connection when you start the game it will give you the option of playing in off-line mode.

I think they may require a connection to their servers after some period of time (months) but I have not run into this.

I usually do not have internet connection.

All my games on steam run fine.

I have Civ4 on steam (as well as a disk somewhere)

Civ 4 is an excellent game. Civ 3 has its flaws, but it introduced important concepts to the game. Civ: The Final Frontier, on the other hand...

All this Civ talk made me play Civ 4 and I was playing Final Frontier Plus. I got bored of it (too many planets per star system to micro-manage) but now started a game of Rise of Mankind: A New Dawn.

I saw something like Caveman 2 Cosmos but that looks like a full game will take 100 hours... even has paleolithic hunting and gathering in it

I am curious what multiplayer Civ is like. Do people still play it? How do you get around someone deciding to take all day on his turn?

When I say Civ II, I mean Civ II MP by default.

Hmm. That wasn't the reference I was intending to make.

caveman 2 cosmos is great (you need a pretty powerful machine to play it though), but it does eat up a lot of time. the other problem is after you've played c2c, you will never want to play ROM:AND again. it just feels empty.

The ~8 seconds between turns in the Renaissance in my 11 civ, Large map game is already bothering me.

                            And that's with 8GB RAM

To be honest, though, I don't need this many civs. 5-6 is probably enough. I'm starting to realize that. With 11 (I don't even know what I started out with since I don't know who was wiped out and who formed from revolutions), you just get a lot of vassal states and backwards, isolated civs.

Scratch that. Now they're offering me contact with Abu Bakr and Ragnar so there's still undiscovered civs.

Okay now it's like 15 seconds per turn. I can't stand it and I can't imagine the late game. I'm going to have to make a new game. Will the speed improve a lot if I play with 6 civs?
