15 seconds per turn is actually quite reasonable (i also have an 8gig machine). if you play on a smaller map with less civs, the speed will improve.

Will I regret installing steam and buying civ IV complete through it?

15 seconds per turn is not reasonable for me. During peacetime, which is most of the time, I spend more time waiting between turns than doing anything each turn. Call me impatient."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

i played on gigantic maps but turn times of more 1 minute in the ancient era were getting too much. what did you think about the pre-historic era?"The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.

I meant to say A New Dawn's wait times were already more than I could handle so I don't know about Caveman 2 Cosmos."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

If there ever was a good cause to furter improve CPU's for casual public Civ IV with those mods is itSocrates: "Good is That at which all things aim, If one knows what the good is, one will always do what is good." Brian: "Romanes eunt domus"

Alby, have you tried Fall from Heaven 2 or Rhye's & Fall of Civilization? Those are the two best mods for the game. Unlike all the ****ty mods whose basic idea is to add 400 new techs, 600 new units, 200 new civilizations and 300 new buildings. Those end up being excessively complicated (and slow) without really changing the game experience much. On the other hand FFH2 and RFC are amazing.Captain of Team Apolyton - ISDG 2012

Also, btw, for those of you who still have some interest in Civ4, we are about to start an Intersite Demogame. Apolyton has fielded a team and will be going up against all the major civ sites. CivFanatics, WePlayCiv, Realms Beyond, Civ4Players, and a bunch of foreign sites. We always need more people.

Fact is that STEAM is far superior to the competition. Personnally I love STEAM as it is easy to buy and install games and there is no faffing with patches - it is done automatically. I love not having to faff with CDs and no-CD cracks - it makes the whole experience far easier. You aren't limited to buying off STEAM and getting the full benefit, but given the STEAM sales, often it is cheapest getting things off STEAM. STEAM also lets you know what is available and provides decent enough previews which again saves time.
Perhaps if you live in an area with limited/expensive broadband then it could be an issue, but you're not who the service is setup for. If your broadband is pants you're not suitable for a service that will require alot of downloading.
I'm also very partial to the 'STEAM achievements'. If it wasn't for those I wouldn't have played CiV beyond a few games. I'd love to have had CivIV BTS on STEAM to see how many hours I had given to that game in my gaming prime.Last edited by kittenOFchaos; June 16, 2012, 06:42.

How much is it on steam because Civ 4 Complete with CD can be bought online for just $15?
In the UK it is £14.99, but it'll be far less (75% off isn't uncommon) during a STEAM sale that includes it (which is quite often). The Summer sale can't be far off...

Yeah, if it was on sale then it would likely be cheaper but right now steam doesn't seem to be selling Civ 4 Complete so you have to buy Civ 4 basic with the expansion packs (or at least searching the steam store for "Civilization 4 Complete" didn't turn up any hits). Totaling up the costs currently listed on steam that would come to ~$36 so without a sale Steam isn't offering a good price. It's over double.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

Great. I started off with 7 civs but now because of the revolutions and the barbarians turning into civs, there's 16 and it's back to lagfest. God damn A New Dawn."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi
