Are you actually stating that all the abuse and cover ups stopped 30 years ago... and that nobody has been abused since then, and that there have been no more cover ups since then?

        And yet the abused continued.

        • Cannot say anything about the USA,
but in germany we have a recent case, where a bishop (Stephan Ackermann, the bishop of Trier) is very protective of pedophile priests and one of these priests, who was convicted of abusing minors in several cases, even was retransferred to positions, where he had access to minors

Two years ago, Germany's Catholic Church was rocked by reports of widespread child abuse. But Stephan Ackermann, the bishop subsequently made the German Bishops' Conference's spokesman on such issues, has rattled many in his own diocese by refusing to actively pursue investigations or impose harsh penalties.

          • And that's the thing, they're not isolated incidents! It's like there has been a coordinated and systematic cover up by the RCC across the whole world.
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

That's the worst aspect of these incidents. When the RCC abetted the crime, not just covered it up.

I'm saying that 90 percent of the cases that come forward these days in America are 40-50 years old. Why? Because that's when the majority of the problem occurred. Weak bishops, lax oversight and the boomer age of aquarius exploded the sex abuse cases in the Catholic church. The last of the lax bishops is gone.

Then why is the abuse, in America, concentrated among certain bishops. Here's a hint. Weakland was one of the folks aiding and abetting the coverup. Good riddance.

Given the enormity of the RCC's cover-up of sexual abuse, it doesn't help your argument to say "but only a few bishops were actually caught!"

The statistics show that 90 percent of the abuse cases were located with just 4 bishops - in this order: Hunthausen, (Seattle) Weakland (Milwaukee), Law (Boston), and Mahoney (LA). Hunthausen was removed in the 80s, Weakland, 2002. Law and Mahoney are finally gone now. Since Hunthausen was removed and the crackdown started in the 80s, abuse cases dropped dramatically from the peak period of 1965- 1985. The problem with the bishops is that the bishops rather then providing oversight, protected the priests in their respective provinces. When they were gone, the cases finally started to come to light - why? Because the bishops were the ones responsible for covering it up.

You need to place the blame, where the blame is due - on the bishops who aided and abetted the problem.

Weakland retired on May 24, 2002 at the mandatory retirement age of 75. Weakland's retirement was overshadowed by revelations that he paid $450,000 of diocesan funds to a former male lover to prevent a lawsuit

It's rather telling that while many Catholics are losing their faith in their Church due to its obvious failings, Ben instead jumped on board to become a member of one of the most corrupt religious institutions in the world. I guess the Mennonites (or whoever it was that he'd previously converted to) weren't raping enough children for his tastes.

The incident showed the industry had developed a culture of complacency and that an accident was near inevitable. The resulting Kemeny commission report was a single vote away from proposing a ban on US Nuclear power as the feeling of those opposed was the safety culture gap was too large to be bridged. The thought that reliance on over engineering was shown a fallacy by the accident regardless of how small the environmental impacts ended up being. The tendency to crow about the lack of environmental impact is a symptom of the over confidence we in the pro Nuke crowd fall prey to.

Why would I pull punches? If there's evidence that he's sheltering the abuse of minors and has been doing so for 40 years, yeah, I have a problem with that. Don't care.

Sheltering people because they are members of an untouchable community is wrong. Why aren't we seeing it blasted across the front pages of USA Today? Because it doesn't serve the purposes of the media. Never has, never will. Seen it many times. If it happens to be someone who the media actually likes, they'll move heaven and earth to bury the ****storm, redirect, obfuscate. They'd rather scapegoat the ones trying to fix the problem, like Benedict XVI, than assail the scum responsible for it. It's just the way the world works.

As Asher has called for here - banning someone calling a spade a spade. Asher didn't care until I mentioned Weakland's proclivities. Odd that. Imagine if I whined and called for the banning of everyone who trashes the Catholic church.

It's rather telling that while many Catholics are losing their faith in their Church due to its obvious failings, Ben instead jumped on board to become a member of one of the most corrupt religious institutions in the world.
So you're insinuating that because I joined the Church in 2005 that I must somehow have been part of the Catholic church abuse scandal?

This is a textbook case of attacking the messenger.

No, I joined because I believe the Church is the Church of Christ, and that I believe the Church has a divine component (doctrine), and a human component (the membership). I can make the distinction that many ex-Catholics fail to do - that there is a difference between the two.

It's a historical argument, for me. The Mennonites were founded by a Catholic priest who was concerned with two things, the corruption inside the Catholic church, and the tendency of those without oversight to lapse into criminality. He wanted to clean up both the Catholic church and the Mennonites. I found certain serious issues with his doctrine that he was teaching others that remain a part of the Mennonite church today. My mennonite friends never adequately addressed the point, instead choosing to attack points that were most certainly not the point at hand. Much like the folks here do.

Here's a clue. I am amenable to substantive arguments that address the points at hand. When you do the shuck and jive, I know I've found something that you cannot address.

Oh, and the fact that I have kind Catholic friends who mean the world to me, that I would do anything for them, plays a huge part too.

I guess the Mennonites (or whoever it was that he'd previously converted to) weren't raping enough children for his tastes.
Ooh, that goes in my sig.

Ok, and now that many of the problems associated with the aforesaid 'culture of complacency', have been dealt with - does that indicate that the US Nuclear power remains unsafe? That's my point. Three Mile Island was over 30 years ago. Things can and do change in that scope of time. Gaging the Church of today by the one in 1975, is no different than judging the US Nuclear industry today based on three mile Island.
