I imagine it would take me all of 30 seconds to figure it out. Shift up when the RPM goes above some number, shift down when it goes below some number, or you anticipate 1) or 2)? How am I doing?
I foresee a burned out clutch and dropped gearbox in your future, lol.

Manual transmissions are stupid. I don't want to have to pay attention to my engine RPM. I want to be required to do as little as possible while driving. Driving is not an activity I enjoy.
Nah, he's right. If you're a city dweller and do not have to tackle unpaved roads and snowdrifts, automatic transmission is much better since it's easier on your brain.
UPD: a clarification. I know how to drive a manual, since you can't get automatic-only driving license here in Russia. The only thing I miss about manual transmission is the flexibility at low speeds, especially when climbing a curb. But my current car is so small it couldn't climb it even with manual transmission.

HC, you drive a manual with your ears and your gut. Looking at the RPMs is useless. It also becomes second nature after a few days of driving, so it's really no different in terms of 'work required'. Just more fun.
That sad, I wouldn't get a manual as my primary car in Chicago - too much stop and go driving.

manuals are more fun to drive and you have more control, I'm amazed anyone who drives in a country where it snows and you get ice on the road would think an automatic is a better choice

A colleague of mine crashed his manual transmission car on an icy road. Granted, he was doing 100mph in an RWD pickup with summer tires .. But if you're a city dweller, you don't need MT.

Eh? It's way better than a stick because it's incessantly stop and go with the snow.
Put it in Snow mode, press the accelerator and you're done (especially with AWD & winter tires). If anything, AT means one less distraction which is exactly what you need with snow and ice driving.

Manual is very fun. I've driven only manuals since I was 19 when I learned to drive on a manual. I was taught originally on an automatic when I was 15.

Badly. It's the synchronisation of clutch and accelerator which is the tricky part.

darn Ben, don't join my side of the argument
