Ben and the National Post weep.
Ottawa is appealing a ruling from the Ontario Court of Appeal that struck down several anti-prostitution laws, though its chances of success are viewed as slim.
“I’m sitting with two very powerful judgments that are going to be very difficult for the government and the Supreme Court of Canada to contradict,” noted lawyer Alan Young, who represented “sex workers” at the Appeal court. “I’m not the desperate party for once. I’m sitting on the top of the hill.”
Ottawa’s attempt comes at the same time Toronto is getting itself all worked up over the possibility that a big casino might be built there. The Ontario government has targeted “gaming” as one possible solution to its precarious financial state, big-time casino operators are sniffing around, and Finance Minister Dwight Duncan is talking up the possibility of a waterfront casino as a thing of beauty.
“These are not the days of Bugsy Siegel. These places have some of the finest shopping, restaurants, convention facilities, park spaces, open spaces,” he said recently. “Imagine an anchor that could create a golden mile on Toronto’s waterfront.” Mayor Rob Ford already has, and is all for it.
If you believe the editorial board of this newspaper, the inability of the average Canadian to indulge in marijuana as they see fit is one of the great injustices of our time. The right-wing National Post must be the most pro-marijuana publication in the country, other than perhaps B.C. Potheads Weekly (which I just invented.) We argue so forcefully in favour of legalization that we even convince our own in-house doubters.
And why not? It’s apparently unfair that people can smoke themselves to death or drink themselves to death, but can’t get stoned at will. Where’s the justice in that? Besides, a poll by Forum Research (one of the many firms that called the Alberta election so precisely) says 66% of Canadians back legalization. And the Liberal party – known for being intimately in tune with Canadian attitudes – voted in January to back legalization.
So, if everything works out right, pretty soon you’ll be able to pick up a hooker, get stoned, and head down to the Toronto waterfront to help the government pay its debts by betting the rent on some blackjack. (Take the subway though — cars are bad for the environment!) This is all OK, because according to current thinking, it is abhorrent to impede on anyone’s right to make a mess of their life in any way they see fit. And if we have any vices at all, then it is not acceptable to get in the way of acquiring new ones. First of all, it’s an insult to the rights, freedoms and intelligence of those who wish to acquire the vices (or even those who don’t actively want to acquire vices, but just kind of fall into it). And it’s unfair to the vices themselves, because how can you be mean to marijuana manufacturers when you’re a government like Ontario’s that makes $1.55 billion a year from liquor sales and fiercely defends its monopoly to ensure it can keep all the vice profits for itself? Anyone who suggests human nature is weak and sometimes needs to be protected from itself is an arrogant, interfering, moralistic, self-important old prude and is free to live on nuts and berries in a monastery, if they can find one.
It all makes sense, and the fact that it’s pretty much the same attitude the British used to have when they monopolized the opium trade in Asia shouldn’t really be a factor. They didn’t make anyone buy the opium, they just made it available for those who did. Who knew the Victorians were so enlightened? It all worked out great until a bunch of interfering moralizers (not to mention the Chinese government) got involved and spoiled the whole thing. Fortunately Toronto won’t have to worry about that, current thinking being so much more advanced than it used to be.
