I don't disagree with you, but I would counter with people looking at Mitt Romney and seeing a giant phony, Newt Gingrich and seeing an utterly contemptable ******* with legitimate psychiatric issues, and Ron Paul and seeing a cryptoracist loon.

I don't deny that Santorum has those same qualities to various extents, but he is better at hiding them, in particular in seeming genuine.

Yep, and look what happened to the genuine moderate in the race. He was basically laughed out the primary.

He meant Huntsman who had the reason for his candidacy existing stolen from him years before.

I knew Huntsman was doomed the instant I realized how intelligent, educated and reasonable he is.

            Competency punished. Sad, really.

No, huntsman was doomed because he entered late and had no charisma.

In today's GOP, the combo of "follows script" and "barking mad" qualifies as charismatic.

His candidacy was doomed in 2009 when he accepted a post in the Obama admin.

They had the advantage of being not mormon, which Huntsman didn't have. A major help in idiotic states like Iowa.

He's at least as charismatic as Obama (which in my opinion isn't saying much), the press just isn't in love with him they way they were in love with Obama. People convinced themselves that Obama was some sort of reincarnation of Cicero, when really his speeches are kinda crappy.

In other words there's no room for moderates in the Republican Party these days. No wonder Snowe is retiring.

Obama used to be a good public speaker when he was devoting most of his time to campaigning. Seriously, he never said anything on the level of "the trees are the right height".
