If you actually look at Huntsman's record, he's not actually a moderate. He just had moderate views on a few things and doesn't go all crazy on his conservative issues. Huntsman has a far more conservative record than Romney for one.

IIRC his pseudo-apology after calling (13-year-old) Chelsea Clinton the "White House Dog" on his TV show was very similar - he accidentally showed a picture of Chelsea identifying her as the White House Dog, when he'd meant to show a different picture. As to what that picture was supposed to be (Clinton didn't have a pet dog at that time), and as to why they didn't fix the mistake in editing, who knows?

I actually posted that very question about Hunstmans 'moderate' status on another forum a while back. I think the issue is more that Hunstman is clearly sane and extremely capable to entering into compromise and bi-partisan negotiation to achieve his goals. He's moderate in as much as he's a real politician who does not cling to extreme partisan views. That's my real worry about this latest turn right by the GOP, any candidate who isn't frothing at the mouth starts to look like a pretty reasonable contender by comparison.
