This is one of my favorite songs. I honestly can not fathom how someone, whether they like it or not, can not accept that this has value:



The poetry of it is obvious. If you truly have an English background, you should be able to understand these lines and recognize the puns and metaphor. I can explain them if you can't. I'll just * the slang or possibly obscure references. Here's some lines:

*Krylon is a common brand of spraypaint.

*pull is slang like power/control over things.

1. The verses you posted, and what I could make out of the "song," are extremely clunky and forced. Like the transition from "pull" to "pulling wool over the eyes," who thinks that sounds clever? It doesn't sound like wordplay so much as free association, like the guy's just saying tangentially related stuff off the top of his head. I did that while I was still high after having my wisdom teeth removed; am I eligible for a Grammy?
2. "Song" is in quotes because that composition, like most if not all rap compositions, is notably lacking in both melody and actual singing. It's a repetitive background beat with some dude talking over it in a vaguely aggressive tone of voice. Also waving his arms like a spastic referee. But in any case, no melody, no singing? Not a song.
3. You owe me that 1:26 of my life back. I imagine the remaining 3:14 is the same blasted thing, just with different barely-intelligible lyrics which, when deciphered, turn out to be bad. Or to be obscure references to old abuses by police.

I only watched twenty seconds of that but what I saw was clearly not a song.

Define 'singing'. I want to know clearly what 'singing' is and isn't. What makes some types of human vocalizations different than others? Is a howl or scream singing or something else? What is the line between talking and singing? What if the talking has rhythm, a musical aspect? Are chants singing or talking?

I don't think you can clearly define singing.

I can't put clear lines about it, no, but I can pretty confidently exclude talking in a normal tone of voice with the only departure from conversational English coming from a tedious, aggravatingly jerky rhythm. "Song" can be used pretty liberally, to include instrumental pieces for example, but melody is kind of a requirement. Drum pieces are musical compositions (and some of them can be quite nice, because they change it up instead of playing the same damn short sequence over and over and over and over again), but I wouldn't call them songs.

Rock and punk was revolutionary music that had high influence on society - rap on the other side seems to be borne by some Abba'esque disco fashion. Strange that it seems to have got same credit as rock/punk.
