You can't split your vote in Illinois. The Gov is who the people vote for in Illinois. If he hadn't stepped down voluntarily, the odds are he would have been elected the Lt Govenor. The election was close that year so it might have made a difference. But remember we re-elected the Rod "The Hair" Blagojevich.

You can in some states. In Virginia you vote for Gov, Lt.Gov and Attorney General separately. Our last governor, a democrat, had a republican attorney general. It pretty much only happens on really close elections though.
The correct solution for Illinois would be for the gubernatorial nominee to pick his lieutenant. Though it would have been a bad thing for Illinois if the Lt. Governor had been a Blago loyalist.
Some states don't even have Lieutenant Governors. I think Tennessee doesn't, they just take the speaker of the state house of representatives or something.If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

No, the normal process is that candidates get involved with the party at grassroots level, build a reputation locally helping the party and then run for nomination having gained the trust of the party. Then again our candidates don't need to be rich in order to stand, which is why we don't suck at democracy.Originally posted by Felch View Post

Ours don't either, kentonio. The main reason most congressmen are generally wealthy is because they get paid **** for people with their skill and education and they have to own two houses. But there are quite a few congressmen that are far from being super-rich.If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

House members aren't generally as wealthy as senators. Senators often need to be able to self-finance a lot of their campaigns, which are statewide. Campaign finance laws
Thanks to the advent of "super pacs" we may see the wealth requirement drop significantly for senatorial races

On the other hand, the total amount of money which must be spent to have a successful campaign will increase enormously.
Obviously this greatly increases the power that wealth provides in our democracy.

There are 13 Democrat and 11 Republican senators above 10m (which was ~10 years ago the point where you no longer needed to work to have a nice living).
27 Republican and 15 Democrat congressmen above 10m.
