  • You can't split your vote in Illinois. The Gov is who the people vote for in Illinois. If he hadn't stepped down voluntarily, the odds are he would have been elected the Lt Govenor. The election was close that year so it might have made a difference. But remember we re-elected the Rod "The Hair" Blagojevich.

    • You can't split your vote? That sounds like an undemocratic invitation for corruption.

        • You can in some states. In Virginia you vote for Gov, Lt.Gov and Attorney General separately. Our last governor, a democrat, had a republican attorney general. It pretty much only happens on really close elections though.

The correct solution for Illinois would be for the gubernatorial nominee to pick his lieutenant. Though it would have been a bad thing for Illinois if the Lt. Governor had been a Blago loyalist.

Some states don't even have Lieutenant Governors. I think Tennessee doesn't, they just take the speaker of the state house of representatives or something.

No, the normal process is that candidates get involved with the party at grassroots level, build a reputation locally helping the party and then run for nomination having gained the trust of the party. Then again our candidates don't need to be rich in order to stand, which is why we don't suck at democracy.

            • Ours don't either, kentonio. The main reason most congressmen are generally wealthy is because they get paid **** for people with their skill and education and they have to own two houses. But there are quite a few congressmen that are far from being super-rich.

              • Biden was the poorest state senator, I think.

                • House members aren't generally as wealthy as senators. Senators often need to be able to self-finance a lot of their campaigns, which are statewide. Campaign finance laws

Thanks to the advent of "super pacs" we may see the wealth requirement drop significantly for senatorial races

                  • On the other hand, the total amount of money which must be spent to have a successful campaign will increase enormously.

Obviously this greatly increases the power that wealth provides in our democracy.

Congressmen can make good money if they're already rich because they can engage in insider trading

But whoah at whoever Alcee Hastings is. He's $4.7M in the hole. I see he was guilty of taking bribes as a judge in the 80's and is still in the hole for legal fees. I don't see why Floridians voted him into Congress after being a corrupt judge.

                          • There are 13 Democrat and 11 Republican senators above 10m (which was ~10 years ago the point where you no longer needed to work to have a nice living).

27 Republican and 15 Democrat congressmen above 10m.

                            • Even some major GOP pundits have essentially thrown in the towel already. This is from the unfortunately-named Erick Erickson:

"When you have a candidate few people really like, whose support is a mile wide and an inch deep, whose raison d’etre (a 4am fancy word) is fixing an economy that is fixing itself without him, and who only wins his actual, factual home state by three percentage points against a guy no one took seriously only two months ago, there really is little reason for independent voters in the general election to choose him if the economy keeps improving.

Seriously, putting it bluntly, conservatives may not like Barack Obama, but most other people do. And when faced with a guy you like and a guy you don’t like who says he can fix an economy that no longer needs fixing, you’re going to go with the guy you like."
