I think more religious people should believe in miracles and stop seeing doctors. The more religious people who do this the better.

It might help if you wrote in intelligible sentences.

Do I believe in free will ?

As opposed to what, predetermination ? Fate ?

Free will and randomness all the way.

Can't say I agree. I'm one of those altruistic atheists who believes in helping the infirm or the poor or the mentally ill.

Could it be you are just not aquanted with these complete nutjobs? Because, let's face it, there are a lot of these poor stupid sons of *****es out there. They populate the Bible belt. Like Kidiculious they believe in miracles and they think science & modern medicine are nonsense. Many of them even believe that going to an evil "secular" doctor is a sign of lack of faith so prayer is not just the prefered method of healing but the only acceptable method of healing. Child Protective Services has removed children being murdered by these religious zealots, under much protest by evil Republicans who prefer they remain in religiously pure families even if it is only to die, but still these dumb child killing bastards remain. I know, we'd all prefer natural selection takes it toll and they'd just die natural deaths like the worthless sacks of dog **** they are but, sadly, these dumb sons of *****es breed like rats.

Aren't you contradicting yourself? If everything happens because of the laws of nature how can we have free will. Don't you believe we are only made up of physical stuff?

Oerdin, you idiot. Please try to post something intelligent.

What does the law of gravity have to do with free will ? Are you suggesting if I believe enough, I'll surmount that particular obstacle and float ?

I fail to see what this has to do with free will.

A little something for you on how injuries to the brain can cause personality changes:

The orbitofrontal cortex is concerned with response inhibition. Patients with orbitofrontal lesions tend to have difficulty with disinhibition, emotional lability, and memory disorders. Patients with such acquired sociopathy, or pseudopsychopathic disorder, are said to have an orbital personality. Personality changes from orbital damage include impulsiveness, puerility, a jocular attitude, sexual disinhibition, and complete lack of concern for others.
The frontal lobe is the largest lobe in the brain, yet it is often not specifically evaluated in routine neurologic examinations. This may in part be due to the attention to detail and rigorous testing strategies required to probe frontal lobe functions.

And no, I didn't just read this on the Internet. I've read nearly all of Oliver Sacks' books, and one or two by Vygotsky & Luria too.

There's even a particularly famous American case.

That's not very fundamentalist of you. Where is your belief in miracles? Clearly you have a disturbing lack of faith.

Molly, I think Kid is invoking something akin to the idea that, if we are simply collections of particles with no spiritual component, all our actions are ultimately determined by the way those particles, and those of the universe, interact. So, what we think of as decision-making is really just our mental machines processing the data, filtering it through beliefs and prejudices accumulated through past interactions, and spitting out an essentially predestined answer. Something like that. Quantum mechanics probably mixes it up by introducing some sort of indeterminacy or what-have-you, but even then it's not "you" who determines the variations in outcome. I suppose that, according to this way of thinking, "you" are only an illusory selfhood superimposed on a collection of mismatched and conflicting impulses.
