Maybe he works ~3000 hours a year? So that's the number he would use to find his hourly rate. Also, if you're assuming he makes $500,000 a year I have no idea why you're assuming that. He's intentionally keeping the amount he makes uncertain, which you can infer from his statement "that's sufficiently broad I'm not giving up anything."
