My brother bought a book on Rhodesia, it's pretty interesting. Turns out the people they were fighting in the bush wars were, remarkably, more racist and evil than the white folks running the place, who had the good sense to not **** with the free-market economy. Black people under Ian Smith were better off than they are now under Mugabe...

Actually the UDI government of Rhodesia had fairly left-wing economic policies at least by American standards; this partly a necessity due to the heavily militarized nature of the country. A lot of it was at the expense of the black population, as the social safety net stuff was for the mostly only available to whites.

The black people of Zimbabwe were better off when it was Rhodesia, though, that is true. Decolonization in central and southern Africa actually has led to decline in standard of living for a lot of people; for instance, average caloric intake is down in the Congo (both of them), CAR, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Probably Botswana too but I'm not sure about that. The situation in Zimbabwe deserves special attention though, because the confiscation of the farmland is essentially what happened in the Ukraine during farm collectivization in the Soviet Union, or in China during the Great Leap Forward, with the same results.

If you think of the white Rhodesians just another tribe, then the situation in Zimbabwe today is really no different, except that the tribe ruling the country (the Shona) has less competent leaders. People tend to forget that there are lots of races of black people in Africa.

I have received some of that same vitriol simply because I am running for the Republican nomination as a conservative. So it's just brainwashing and people not being open minded, pure and simple.

I actually agree that a lot of people black and white blindly follow there leaders. Still, when you weigh the facts, I believe that Democrats have the best solutions for America regardless of race.

No, no. Republicans have made it clear. It's black people's fault for... Well, everything. They even have Herman Cain claiming it's poor people's faults that they're poor. I'll agree that many people make poor choices but the Republicans just love, and I me LOVE, to blame everyone else while demanding sympathy for themselves when anything happens to them. Personal responsibility is always for other people according to our right wing friends just as I'm sure it is some how the fault of black people that Republicans systematically go around passing laws trying to prevent black people from voting.
