Isn't that basically what the US and Britain did in WW2?

Siding with someone while a conflict is occurring because their victory would be less bad is different from expressing support for bad people long after the conflict ended because the other side was even worse. In the former situation your actions have actual consequences and you need to seek the best outcome.
