I've seen those, the lace edgings are very nice, but it's really more of an "old lady" thing.

I just misread that as "edible." Taste and see that the Lord is good?

Also, Orthodox Study bible--I think it's NKJV for NT and a new translation of the Septuagint for the OT.

Cloth, of the 3. Leather can be... well, crappy. If want to go with high level cover, try calfskin or goatskin. But those get pricey as well.

Bleh for NKJV. KJV was based on the oldest Greek manuscripts when it was written in 1611. We've found older Greek versions since. Also, while the 'thee' and 'thou' are removed, you still have some "bad English" based on the fact that they went complete formal equivalence in translation, even when doing so made no sense in English (don't get me wrong, formal equivalence can be ok [my main Bible is NRSV], but they have to have some flexibility and go dynamic on occasion when the verse, or paragraph, demands it).
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
                        - John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

Personally I prefer the Douay-Rheims bible, which is online, thankfully. Wonderful translation.

What translations do other people prefer?

I like NRSV (one of the 3 I have is actually a Catholic edition, Ben ). It's formal, but not so rigid, it will not make things easier for readability when the direct Greek to English doesn't work.

The NIV is fine as well, but since it is a strictly Protestant translation, it lacks the Apocrypha. I actually wanted a 2011 NIV, but while searching, I came across a "Like New" (on Amazon) Pitt Minion Goatskin NIV, 1984 edition for $30. I couldn't pass that up. The 2011 changes aren't that big anyways (the "major" one being gender inclusive language when appropriate, which the NRSV has had since forever).

NSRV is quite popular with Catholics. I teach with one. Gets the job done.

For 99 percent of what I do the NIV is good enough. Used to own one, gave it away. It was a gift from a friend.

Since then I've not had a paper bound bible.
