  • I've pretty much burned my bridges with that particular dealership. Man was I pissed. Con artists or retards -- either way, they're never getting any business from me and I'm sure as **** going to tell everyone I know about it.

    • the way the credit system works, you get points for borrowing and paying.

don´t you have a mortgage? that counts as a loan. with my first mortgage i had the same problem as you: i could pay for it and was financially very solvent, but my credit score was too low because i had never needed any loans. so the solution was to set up my parents as guarantors.

      • How are you getting a mortgage on your house then?

Also, take a look at the Honda CRV. My dad has one. It's very similar to the RAV4 and works great for us.

I've had a $15K line of credit I've used on and off for 6 years. And about 10 years of active credit card use. That's why my score is in the top 1% of Canadians. That DID NOT MATTER to Toyota Finance, inexplicably.

We've been pre-approved for a Mortgage of $750,000 over 25 years. Our house is actually substantially less than that.

But yes, this is another inexplicable thing. The big banks look at my history and score and throw credit at me whenever I want it...

I'd no problem at all getting approvals for obscene mortgages. None at all.

The mortgage payments don't start til we move in (January), so it's not on the credit report yet.

I will drive the CRV but I'm leaning more towards the Acura RSX.

            • Car dealerships are rather hilarious. I suspect if you went to another Toyota dealer you'd be asked to walk over and view their Lexus line.

              • Yeah, I've sent out some feelers to other dealerships (including one out-of-town one 20 mins south of the city limits) who insist they'll beat any deal from the city dealers.

                • might be a trick to denegate your purchase, they weren`t making any money off of you anyway.

                  • Yep. I'm suspecting a con job.

They have none of them on the lot, there's a waiting list for it. It's likely they just wanted a sucker who'd pay list price or above.

                    • The sales guy just emailed me asking to come back in and consider their leasing offer.

I replied rather diplomatically saying I don't have any trust in the dealership (and in particular the finance manager), and since my bank has extended my line of credit we will be paying cash for our vehicle and it will certainly not be at his dealership.

I then wished him a good day.

                      It felt good, sadly.

                      • sounds like we found the source to your ´credit issue´. why sell a car for which supply can´t meet demand below normal margin? it would be business-technically insane.

                        • the math: car should be about 23k, 2.5%, they make 575 profit
23k, 8k loan gross profit, with some internalized costs, about 7.5k profit total

                          swindle swindle...

go to your bank, borrow the money there, or even just take it out of your mortgage. pay the car cash. get is somewhere else and honk when you drive by the dealership.

                          • Hilarious.

I've had my passive-aggressive email going back and forth now. Now the sales guy, finance manager, and 3 other dealership employees (one of which is the dealership manager) are on the CC list.

I expressed my sincere disappointment since the dealership had been recommended to me, and I had lost my trust in them and would be advising friends, family, and colleague to avoid the same mistake I made.

Suddenly new discounts have sprouted out from nowhere. While they are maintaining the illusion that I couldn't qualify for financing, they've now "secured" financing for me from some bank at 6.9% interest. But now the base cost of the car has fallen! Oh no, discounts flew in from nowhere that used to explicitly not apply. It's a curious number of discounts.

I made an excel spreadsheet to see the total monthly payments and total cost of ownership.

The new number is 84 cents per month cheaper than the original offer I "couldn't qualify for".

                            Magic.

My new plan is to express skepticism and see if they improve it more. I still will never buy from them. The out of town dealership will pricematch.

                              • Well, it's $100 a month cheaper than their initial offer that was given since I "could not qualify".

It's now almost the exact same price I initially agreed to purchase it for. Which is miraculous, suspicious, but still encouraging.
