Alright then. You've at least convinced me to go see it if I'm nearby.

It is realistic (obviously), stoic, stereotypical and done in a similar style popular in the Soviet Union, East Germany and China:

Finally, the sculptor is from the PRC, as mentioned by Oerdin. Here he is:

Did they have to make him look like Mel Gibson? I also love how the statue got vandalized so often they decided to put a metal cage around it!

Our local equivalent is "The Cardiff Kook" which is a really horrible statue of a surfer at Cardiff by the Sea (que Mobius whining about Americans stealing British city names). Coming up with creative ways to vandalize or dress up the statue has become something of a local tradition with some of the better pranks being dressing it up as a female Mexican wrestler (complete with face mask), having it make a comment about rude surfing styles, turning it into a crucified Jesus, and a rather odd one where a giant plastic dildo was glued on in an anatomically correct location while he held a giant umbrella. My personal favorite was when it got eaten by a giant paper mache shark.

That's actually pretty ****ing awesome, Oerdin. Not the statue, the pranks.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Someone usually does holliday themed pranks as well.

                        Last 4th of July:

And I'm sure you can guess which holiday this one was for:

Nobody actually damages the statue but they're very happy to ridicule it in creative ways which turn out to be more artistic then the statue itself.

It looks more like Mighty Forehead Man.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Good jokes guys, but socialist realism is srs bznz. The statue portrays Germany's answer to the great comrade Stalin: Ernst Thälmann.
