In the Catholic church they have to be ordained by a bishop. The priests give the homily during mass to all the Church.

Other denominations have different rules. Most simply require an audience willing to listen to them to become a preacher. What they consider to be a calling from God.

No it's not. Imams are not ordained and giving bull**** powers like transubstantiation. Imams are usually Islamic scholars who are appointed by majority vote by the community of the masjid they serve and lead the community in prayer, but any capable Muslim can lead prayer, regardless.

There are no 'clerics' in Islam.

So whatever political beliefs a particular Imam has are his own personal beliefs and he does not represent any 'church'.

From what I have read, it is true that Brelvik was not a religious Christian. In that point those who identify him with Christianity the same way that Al Queda is identified with Islam are obviously wrong.

I disagree with Kenobi that there can not be cultural Muslims. Right now I am thinking of my former roommate.

You can point to recent Christians (although ones at the boundary) like David Koresh if you want a better example of a violent Christians.

Koresh believed he was the Messiah. Not sure how that makes him a Christian.
