There are many that argue the intent of this letter AFTER it was made public. (many Catholic sources in particular) But, I would argue that if not, why was it sent as strictly confidential. It was obviously never intended to be made public.

No, and I don't have to be a historian to figure that out from the letter. Reads exactly as a letter back and forth out of the public eye. Lots is unsaid that wasn't needed to be said and lots said that wouldn't have been said otherwise.

Even as a repub that took some great delight from some of those, I have come to the conclusion, that while there were probably a few things that were over the line, that it was a total hatchet job and the reaction was way over what it should have been.
