    • The fact that in recent decades people have tried to change the meaning of the word to refer to non-mainstream religions doesn't change the fact that all organized religions are cults, by definition.

If you want to change the definition of cult because you don't like the connotation, pick a different word to describe the extreme faiths.

A chronic problem with religious people is they view their religion as sane or sensible just because it's been around for "thousands of years", while new upstart religions like Scientology are "cults". They're the ****ing same thing. One is older than the other, that's it.

The concept of Xenu is obviously ridiculous, but it makes complete sense that Joseph Smith translated words only he could see in magic stones. And he had personal conversations with Jesus, remember.

      • I think one distinction between ancient religions and the more modern ones is that the origins of things like Mormonism are better documented, so you have to be crazier to not realize that they are fake. The older ones are just extremely unlikely.

        • When Christ was alive, it wasn't really Christianity... rather it was a Jewish cult.
          He's still alive.

          • So much for omnipotence and omniscience, then.
So much for free will. We can defy God.

Free will doesn't matter one iota. Yes, we can defy God, but if he's omniscient, then he knows we're going to do it. And if he knows we're going to defy him and is omnipotent, then he can stop us. And if he knows we're going to defy him and he can stop us from doing so but he chooses not to, then it's part of his plan to let it happen. There is no logical way around this. There doesn't have to be a logical way around this, because an omnipotent god can break all the rules if he wants to, but if you want to argue about god logically, you cannot ignore this.

              • To go a step further, this logical conundrum can easily be solved in one of five ways:

                1) Admit that God is not omniscient.

                2) Admit that God is not omnipotent.

                3) Admit that evil is a part of God's plan.

                4) Admit that humans do not have free will.

                5) Admit that God is so omnipotent that logic does not apply to him.

If he's omniscient it means he can not only see what's going to happen, but he can see all the possibilities of every action.

And if he knows we're going to defy him and is omnipotent, then he can stop us.
                  Absolutely.

And if he knows we're going to defy him and he can stop us from doing so but he chooses not to, then it's part of his plan to let it happen.
His plan put us in the garden with everything we needed here on earth with no suffering, but we had to obey his rules. We chose to disobey.

Are you suggesting that if Adam had obeyed that God would have punished us anyway? I don't see that at all.

He has a plan but he also lets us decide what part in that plan we are going to play. It was never his plan for man to fall in sin.

And because he's omniscient, he knows what part we're going to choose to play. Therefore, whatever we end up doing is also part of his plan. Again, this is logic one-oh-****ing-one.

Not necessarily. If he can see all possible futures, then he can be omniscient and still not know until after the event which choices are made.

                          • That just means he's bad at being omniscient.

                              • You cannot logically combine "omniscience" with "not knowing." If there are things he cannot know, then he is not omniscient. He may be pretty ****ing smart, and know most things, but he's not omniscient. So, see point 1 of post 113.
