Not sure which thread to post this in, but I thought of it while re-reading the 1st book, Game of Thrones, so I suppose the book thread is the better place to post it...
The cause of the distruption between Ned and King Robert is Roberts desire to kill Daenerys once he finds out she is with child and is worried about the potential that she could be carrying a male heir who could potentially rise against Robert and claim the throne. Ned gives options rather than having her (and her unborn child killed) including that she could miscarry, the child could be a girl or die in infancy, that they had nothing to fear of a male born child as long as it remained on the other side of the sea. I read this and thought "WFT?", what about Viserys? I admit, Viserys isn't much of a man, but he is none the less a man, and I would think more of a threat to Robert than an unborn babe. Why is it they (the King's Council) fear Daenerys and her child while they don't worry (and haven't worried) about Viserys?
One could argue that it is because the don't consider Viserys a threat, but I doubt they know enough about him to be able to judge acurately, and I would think if they fear Daenerys, that they would be more worried about Viserys.
Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Reek's story was great (though, if it gets that far, I think it may even be a bit much for HBO to film). The length of Snow's story was necessary to justify the end, I think. As I said, I do think that Tyrion stagnated, but he had just finished a major arc the last time we saw him. Plenty happened in the book, we just didn't get the multiple epic payoffs that it seemed we were going to get when there were a few hundred pages left.
I'm happy to complain about 6 years as much as the next person, but that's an expectations problem, not a story problem."In the beginning was the Word. Then came the ******* word processor." -Dan Simmons, Hyperion

Partway through book 3 and still finding it interesting-- I just recently read the first Samwell chapter and enjoyed his perspective.
Also I really liked the council chapter-- I believe it was a Tyrion chapter but to see lord Tywin in action was fun.
Looks like some crazy times ahead for Jaime, Tyrion, Cersei, Arya and the gang
I really like Arya's spunk and have to keep reminding myself that she's only 10 which explains why she is often not that bright about things .
Sansa-- I don't loathe her as some do-- she's just being what she trained for and the fact that she is naive about the office politics of the aristocracy is understandable and even forgivable when you consider that her father was too busy being honorable to pay proper attention to such matters. You don't get to 300 losses without being a pretty exceptional goaltender.-- Ben Kenobi speaking of Roberto Luongo

I'm roughly halfway through ADWD, and I'm definitely getting the "Wheel of Time nothing happens" vibe, and for the same reason: so many characters. It's hard to really advance things when you're bouncing around between 10-15 PoV characters. Too many - it kills any momentum in the story. It works with fewer, really, but once you get up into double-digits it gets a little nuts.
Anyway, some spoily thoughts:
Spoiler:Reek, Reek, it rhymes with weak. It's wierd... part of me wants to enjoy Theon's commeupance, but of course I can't. I find myself rooting for him to do something - anything - decent and then die.
Jon Snow knows a lot more than nothing. Dude's just about the only guy on his continent with his eye on the ball.
Tyrion... wallowing in self-pity with a dash of murderous hate is no way to go through life, son.
**** the Boltons and Freys, good and hard. Here's hoping. What was that I was saying about murderous hate? Nevermind...
I just got to Arya... still in superspy/hero training I see. Good to see ya, kiddo. I hope you end up the badass I hope you'll be.
Dany - meh. I can see this coming a mile away. She's trying so hard to be good and noble and it's going to bring nothing but trouble and she'll learn the lesson that you gotta be a hardass or you're toast. The whole "mother of slaves" thing is going to end badly, and slavery will continue as before. Lovely. I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it.
Oh, and wtf. The book is A Dance with Dragons. I've seen the dragons *once*, caged.

Same with Arrian. Roughly halfway through and getting REAL bored with all the walking about and nothing happens. We can develop characters AND have something happen. Martin proved that in the first three books!
Furthermore, I preferred AFFC (to this point) because at least Dorne and the Iron Islands were interesting.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I'm going to be the dissenting opinion here; I've got probably another ~200 pages or soSpoiler:Tyrion just went over to Brown Ben
Spoiler:I can't believe how long it took me to figure out that Abel and crew were Mance and his spearwives. I knew Mel had likely sent him to help Stannis in some way, but it wasn't until the women confronted Theon in the godswood that it finally clicked for me.
