While in general I agree much of Hollywood mostly does what it does because it follows tried and true safe formulas for profit. But its hard to deny Hollywood's products end up being much more left friendly than reality:

Also actors with right wing views are generally shunned and ostracised. And no I'm not talking about old Mel here, I mean like people who voted for Reagan.
Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila

Sure, reality shows appeal to dumb people but most importantly they're dirt cheap. I mean really, really cheap. With the advent of 1000 cable channels there is a whole lot of air time to fill and network sitcoms are actually very expensive to produce since they have dozens of writers permanently on staff, they need special sets and backgrounds, usually you want big name stars who demand big pay checks in order to get out of bed, they require multiple shots & lots of post production editing or worse expensive special effects, and while the production value is very high they're also very costly to produce. When there were only three networks they could afford to fill their prime time slots with these expensive shows but now that there is 1000 channels... Well, that's a lot of air time to fill yet the total network budget still isn't 1000 times larger. That means sending one guy out with one camera man to film a travel show or a food show makes sense because that costs next to nothing to do and it doesn't cost much more to get a dozen college bozos drunk and then film their antics at the local trailer park. Throw in college co-eds who are willing to get naked and screw some of the bozos on the set and you have a low cost reality show. Heck, even if you "splurge" and set them up in a hotel in Maui you're still talking 1/10th the price of a full fledged network sitcom. In short, my take on reality tv is that it allows the networks to fill the air time on those 1000 cable channels in a very cost effective manner so that's what they do it. You get sex, drunken drama, and people willing to humiliate themselves on national TV without even having to pay them for it; you just say "who wants to get famous by being on TV?" and the bozos line up for to do the job for free.

It's kind of hard to swallow Billo's outrage about Weiner's weiner when Billo himself has a sex scandal in the recent past. What was that about people in glass houses throwing stones?

Hollywood makes movies and TV shows which aren't stone age in their outlook because that's what sells.
Which is why the best selling movies and tv shows are g-rated?

Or how the Passion was a total flop.

Guess what? The money isn't in pandering to religious bigots especially since overt pandering to the bigot class would likely offend other more profitable demographics who watch more TV thus the media companies won't risk losing a bird in the hand to try to get one in the bush.
Unfilled, probably a very profitable market that would blow the others out of the water. That there is demand for these types of shows should lead to this demand being filled. That it's not is an indication that there's money to be had by those willing to cater to this demographic.

The best selling moves are PG not G rated and the reason that is so is because kids go to the movies a hell of a lot more often then anyone else. Mom & Dad are happy to get rid of the runts for a couple of hours so they can pretend they're 25 again by having sex on the living room floor while junior is excited to be going out with his friends on their own without his parents watching over his shoulder. Sure, not every movie is designed for the 12-15 year old boys but a hugely disproportionate number of them are because that's the demographic who spends the most time in the theaters and who is willing to pay to see a movie multiple times if they like it.

Facts are stubborn things. Seems to me that the market is saying that they want good movies like Toy Story 3. BTW, I don't see 'Sex in the City' anywhere.

I'm a bit surprised that Alice in Wonderland beat out Inception. Maybe I shouldn't be since I loved that movie best of all the ones I saw last year. I've still not seen any this year.

Like Prince Caspian? Already made a ****-ton of money. LOTR made a ****-ton of money.

There's already a company that does just that. It's called EWTN. Look them up sometime.

What the market wants is lots of movies with girls showing their tits while things explode because that's what teen boys like to see while the studios want to produce that as cheaply as possible. So that the production costs are as low as possible and the gross margin is as high as possible on the latest cars going fast, buildings blowing up, while girls show their tits movie. Sure, there are other types of films out there but that's why the summer block busters are all super hero movies or action movies.

Look at the list of the most profitable movies of all time: The Lord of the Rings, Mrs Doubtfire, There is something about Mary, The Hangover, Jaws, Home Alone, American Beauty, Star Wars, Grease, ET, etc... The only really conservative and/or religiously bent one is the Passion of the Christ and it's pretty far down the list. The kids want spaceship battles between guys with mystical powers, sword fights in fantasy worlds, guys who dress up like women, and girls who put jizz in their hair not knowing it's jizz but they're not above watching mean sharks eating all the people who go to the beach. I wouldn't call any of those conservative.

Now the biggest box office sales movies of all time skews more grown up but the list of most profitable movies of all time shows why Hollywood keeps going after those tried and true themes.

Exactly 0 movies in the top 12. It may be what you want to see, but that's not what people are willing to go to the movies to pay to see.

because that's what teen boys like to see while the studios want to produce that as cheaply as possible.
Obviously teen boys aren't the ones spending the money. Newsflash, Oerdin. Twilight was number two. Tells me that teen girls are a far bigger demographic. Girls > Boys and Families > Adults. Family friendly movies that cater to girl sensibilities is what brings in the dough. Now look at that list of movies and tell me if that's now what you see reflected in them.

So that the production costs are as low as possible and the gross margin is as high as possible on the latest cars going fast, buildings blowing up, while girls show their tits movie. Those 'blockbusters' are getting the hype but they aren't pulling in the dough. Despicable Me blew all of them out of the water.

That link is crap, Oerdin. It keeps timing me out.

Edit, that's not total profit Oerdin, but ROI. They inflation adjust the cost, but they don't inflation adjust the profits, which means that you get number one overall is "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".

Nothing before Jaws. Pretty sorry list.

Passion of the Christ and it's pretty far down the list.
Number 8 all time by that list.

The movie, which is the highest grossing non-English language film of all time, earned over seventeen times its budget
Not too shabby. How many other non-English language films even cracked the top 100?
