It does not mean that the experience of women in france is much much worse than the experience of women in the US.

Yet womens equality came to Europe earlier than America, and you were still fighting for civil rights in the US in the 60's.

But I am talking about now. The experience of people living in the various places now.

Talking to Swedes about america, I am always shocked about how they think we live...

      • Dude, Europeans are racist as ****. The way you treat Arabs/Turks and the way political discussions are framed in the news over there ("Multiculturalism has utterly failed") is shocking to Americans who actually find out about this stuff. Then there's the British and their whole 'Pakis' thing.

        • have you ever actually met a European?

The P word is about the same as the N word in the US. It's completely beyond the pale for anyone to use it. There might be some pockets of racists left who still use it but that's about it.

Jon's got a good perspective on this I think. We do probably see the worst of both sides on the news etc. and rarely see the day to day life.

"The way you treat arabs/turks" you are probably judging the whole country by a few high profile incidents. Which were high profile mainly because they are unusual.

There's not much difference between the US and UK and North Western Europe. Most cities I've been in all those places everyone is mostly rich, mostly safe and mostly multicultural.

The places where you tend to get more racial problems (in US and Europe) are those that are less racially integrated.

And in the poorer areas of big cities, and in the poorer cities on both sides of the atlantic there are more problems.

Mikes already covered the P word thing, but on multiculturalism I think it says something about the depths of nuance involved. When people here talk about multiculturalism failing, they're generally talking about a particular approach to integration I.E. immigrant communities being encouraged to retain as much as possible of their home culture rather than attempting to integrate into the guest society. It was rarely spelt out clearly, but it became the norm and has to an extent failed as it tends to lead to a form of ghettoization. The push now is more towards encouraging immigrants to learn the language and culture, while not asking them to give up their former cultural influences. Blending rather than seperating in other words.

You'll struggle to find many European politicians in favour of building a large wall across their borders btw.

Oh and do we kidnap them, fly them to third countries for torture and then lock them up in an offshore prison camp without due process for a decade? /snark

As usual dip****, you are wrong. Stay in the ghetto. Come to think of it, please date your courthouse girlfriend. That way we don't have to suffer from your ignorance anymore at least for a while.

You've piqued my curiosity here; who in particular are you referring to/thinking of, and which racial terms do they use?

Also, if you want an example of American racism, our random Arab kidnappings aren't the best choice; that's more of an atrocious foreign policy, and its support, such as it has/had, comes from paranoia about security more than paranoia about race. I'd have mentioned the Dubai Ports scandal, where half the country flipped out because swarthy people might be handling logistics for Baltimore Harbor.

I'll come back and post something more comprehensive in a bit (got to nip out now) but as a quick example how about half the GOP and media screaming about how Obama was 'OMGF a secret muslim trying to take over America!!'. Wondered how that must have felt to any muslim american kids growing up with any political aspirations? Or Herman Cain talking about how he wouldn't have any muslims in his cabinet?

so far you have succeeded in proving that some people don't like the catholic church because of its backwards views on social issues. this is slightly more impressive than proving that the sun rises in the east. congratulations. however, you have not proven, that an atheist is more likely to be biased against the catholic church than any other relgious group.
