      • Another favorite Republican voter suppression tactic: Let's say you are a black voter in a swing state like Florida, let's say you live in a black neighborhood, and let's say you have a fairly common name like "John Smith". There might be 100 different people named John Smith in that county some of which are white and live in white areas and some of which are black and live in black areas. Republicans have passed laws baring convicts from voting for life and maybe 1 of those 100 people named John Smith was previously convicted for a crime so Republicans will go through and challenge the registration for all persons named John Smith who live in areas which don't routinely vote Republican. They won't do that for the white people named John Smith (they get to vote without a problem) but the black people named John Smith will show up at their local poll and the Republican agent will challenge their right to vote claiming that they're a convicted felon who can't legally vote. Sure, there was one person named John Smith who is a convict but if you're one of the other 99 John Smiths how do you prove that's not you? Especially since you have to do that before polls close at 6pm.

Now, this problem could be easily solved by simply using Social Security numbers but Republicans deliberately don't do that, they want everyone possible from the black area to be denied an opportunity to vote because, as the OP said, 90% of blacks vote for the other party so the more blacks they prevent from voting the better it is for them. Thus they are not just willing but gleefully go about systematically trying to prevent blacks from voting then we get stupid threads like this asking why blacks refuse to vote for Republicans. The new voter ID laws which Republicans passed this year in almost every state they control also has the same effect; preventing the poor and the elderly from voting mostly in urban districts which trend Democratic. MSNBC ran a piece last Friday about a black woman over 100 in Tennesee who had voted in every election since she was able, including the 1928 election, she voted in Tennessee all through the bad days of Jim Crow, yet now because she's over 100 and no longer has a driver's license (to old to drive) she has suddenly found she can not legally vote. Because the registration laws were changed by Republicans in Tennessee (and indeed in just about every state they control) she was told it was too late to reregister to vote or to get a new government ID. This is a woman who spent over 80 years voting but now can no longer vote in her state because of Republican voter suppression tactics.

That's just wrong. Republicans know they can't win in free fair and open elections and that's why they resort to such evil voter suppression tactics.

You wouldn't know historical evidence if it bit you on the ass. You are anti-Elizabeth because you're a catholic and you have some bizarre need to paint history to suit your own self image, which is shown by the way you try and whitewash the savagery of Bloody Mary. You are guilty of revisionism of the very worst sort and I actually wish I was religious so I could call on a higher power to strike you down for your intellectual dishonesty.

How is the factual statement, "Queen Elizabeth I executed more people in her reign than the purported, "Bloody Mary", anti-Elizabeth? It's the truth.

Are you arguing that asserting the truth about Elizabeth I is anti-Elizabeth?

Are you asserting that one can only be pro-Elizabeth by making conter factual assertions?

You don't sound like much of an Atheist? What is the proper response to an Atheist calling down their Gods? Am I supposed to be terrified?

Oh heavens, whatever shall I do. Sheesh, at least the Norse have Thor who's way better at smiting.

yup. it's not the fact he's wrong about everything and has a truly bizarre and perverse world view that gets my back up, it's the fact that he just any lacks any intellectual honesty and lies repeatedly.

i mean fair play to kentonio. he's demolished all of his most recent nonsense.

                        • I think it's safe to say that some people on this board will think the worst of Ben for no other reason than he is a religious Catholic. I also think it's safe to say that most people simply read into his posts what they want to read into them instead of actually taking them for what they are. And frankly it is as if all this prejudice and hatred is not being levelled at a human being anymore but at some caricature of religious nuttery. Ben isn't a person to some people on this board. He's a bogeyman, or a witch who everyone can be comfortable with burning, simply because taking his views seriously is perceived as far too radical a proposition, so far outside the comfortable confines of our every day assumptions, that not only should they not be taken seriously, but their author should be demonised at every turn. Who shall everyone demonise next, I wonder?
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

It is not because he is a religious catholic.

There are many religious catholics I admire.
