It is my understanding that the contraction y’all was considered correct American English in times past. At what point was this word removed from valid American English?

Y'all is a colloquialism. Not proper English.
How does a word become part of proper English?

When you can use it on a college paper and not fail.

When would I need to use second person plural in a college paper?

Any "proper" word started as a colloquialism.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

He also hates Texans and Australians, he does diversify." ~ Braindead

And the really bad ones never graduate. Like "Y'all".

This just because it's not common in Calgary doesn't make it absolute.
Y'all (pronounced as one syllable (/jɔːl/ yawl)) is a contraction of the words "you" and "all". It is used as a plural second-person pronoun. Commonly believed to have originated in the Southern United States, it is primarily associated with Southern American English, African-American Vernacular English, and some dialects of the Western United States.[2] It is also found in the English-speaking islands of the West Indies.

I never denied it was common. It is common, especially in certain regions of the US.

That doesn't mean it's proper English. Considering English doesn't have a plural second-person pronoun, it's quite impossible for it to be proper.

OK. I wasn't thinking it was about Shakespearian-type proper. I suppose I have to agree.

                          Shakespeare used colloquial English.

Ye is Old English, not Standard/Proper English.
