American English only contracts forms of have when used as auxiliaries

Does any of this sound proper?
    You've a car.
    They've a house.
He's a cat. (How do you know if it's He has or He is?)

Have is usually contracted with the pronoun when it is an auxiliary verb. As a main verb (indicating possession), it is not normally contracted by American native-speakers.

Good idea Asher. We'll see who's been substantively owned.

For some reason, the wiki page no longer states that. It was erroneous.

WTF? I went to the Wiki article and it didn't say what Albert claimed it said. He's a liar!

If you're going to put it back, you'll need a citation.

By looking at him? Really, if potential ambiguity with proper grammar is your concern, you may as well just give up with English.

                          Think about it this way.

"I have a cat" is valid. Yes?
Why is "I've a cat" not valid? Why would a contraction -- whose entire purpose is brevity -- require additional verbosity to be proper? It's nonsensical.

I feel uncomfortable saying sentences like the following: "I've a car" instead of "I have a car" "They've a great time" instead of "They have a great time" "He's a pen" instead of "He has a pen" ...

None of this indicates it's not correct.
