    • Besides, KH, you still haven't answered my question.

Given instrumental rationalism as the basis for market theory, why won't economy account for the fact that the most rational thing to do would be to skew the rules?

It's as if your boss could credibly threaten to fire you AND make sure you couldn't work for any other firm currently in your industry.

What? If one person can threaten to withhold labor why can't multiple people threaten to do it at the same time? I can see a problem with forcing someone else to withhold labor if they don't want to.

        • A labor union is, more or less, a legal monopoly supplier of labor. There are some outs for employers (which may or may not be binding on the monopoly). It is that simple.

Gribbler, they can, the difference with a union is that you have to even if you don't want to if 51% of workers agree to strike. Without a state-sanctioned union then only 51% of the workers will strike.

Why can't multiple companies refuse to hire each other's employees or negotiate prices?

Well, in many cases they can merge, in which case they wouldn't be in competition any more, although to some extent the state limits this.

Compare: number of strikes struck down by a special law vs. number of monopolistic/cartel behavior actually brought down.

That's why we have the FTC, yes, and it's also exactly why antitrust was initially used to bust unions.

How many real monopolies for labor are there, gribby? Don't be ridiculous. In order to get one for assembly-line workers you'd have to band together most of the heavy industry in the US.

At what point does a pool of workers become large enough that the cost of replacing them all would be too high and they should be broken up?

So what exactly is the problem? Even with unions there is substantial labor competition.
