A labor union is, more or less, a legal monopoly supplier of labor. There are some outs for employers (which may or may not be binding on the monopoly). It is that simple.

Gribbler, they can, the difference with a union is that you have to even if you don't want to if 51% of workers agree to strike. Without a state-sanctioned union then only 51% of the workers will strike.
