It comes down to your personallity. Do you like managing people? If not, stick to R&D.

Asher, be honest, how good is your people skills in a management setting? I ask because management isn't just making goals, budgets, or design decisions but also getting employees to work together even when they don't like each other or have personality conflicts.

I'd personally shun going down the management route and stick techie but that is just the way I am, but I strongly suspect you are similar in inclination...although not all of my job is techie and now I am a frelancer so I couldn't give a sh*t about career progression with the money I am on.

Asher, what about the third choice - joining the circus?

I'd say go with management; If you hate it you can always go back to dev work. I wouldn't pass up an opportunity that has limited windows of entry when you can always fall back on something you know you're already great at.

Believe it or not, my leadership and interpersonal skills are what made me stand out for this role, according to my manager. I'm friendly, helpful, and outgoing in a sea of ESL introverts.

That's not a bad idea. Put me in the circus camp. I mean the circus with animals and trapezes, not the military.

I'm leaning towards the tech lead position currently, because of the potential for advancement trumps technical interest. I figure I can always develop on my own time…

                          Good choice. And good luck!

Congrats Asher. I'm sure you'd make a success of either path, FWIW, but all the best.

You should have quit and become the team lead of a local Geek Squad at Best Buy.

                                (Seriously, congrats)
