I've actually tried it with and without. It didn't seem to make much difference. But perhaps I need to add more cinnamon.

      • My mom's apple pie recipe is "add cinnamon and brown sugar until the pie is brown enough." (The actual written-down recipe that she gave me provided measurements, but when I used them the pie tasted wrong; when I called her up and asked her about this she said "Oh yeah, I just made those numbers up, when I make the pie I just add cinnamon and brown sugar until the pie is brown enough")

This sounds interesting but I'm surprised they just put it all together and toss it into the oven without marinading it at all.

          • To follow up on this, this has been a golden thread.

Guy's pasta recipe has been a can't miss recipe for the last year. Easy to make a lot of. Add some chicken -- normally I buy whole rotisserie chickens and then pick the chicken meat off the bone. Eat for a week.

The other go-to recipe has been beef and barley stew. The recipe from cooks.com is simple and forgiving for variations. You can buy frozen stew vegetables from the supermarket for cheap.

Have found out that making lots of food at once and then refrigerating or freezing for the future is definitely the way to go.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

            • A tip. Despite my best efforts (), my now-wife doesn't like to drink alcohol. So it's tough to get rid of bottles of white wine that I open for cooking. A good substitute that I have been using is cider in 12 oz bottles (Woodchuck).

                • Yes, it is sweet. I would welcome other suggestions.

                  • Try making duck a l'orange using Gran Marnier, and serve it with small glasses of Gran Marnier. She'll soon be drinking like a champ!
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I tend to cook in a streak so I can go through a small bottle of generic dry Italian table red or white without any going to waste.

                              • anything that looks like penises is good, no wonder the peppers worked - just make sure none of them is bigger than your equipment to avoid later disappointment

that Osso bucco looks way too much like castration or menstruation to ever be a good choice. Laz has obviously been married too long and is the father of daughters
