School board spends $5K on French keyboards

CBC News has learned that Riverside School Board on Montreal's South Shore is spending $5,000 to replace English keyboards with French ones, while English laptops will have stickers put on to cover any English words, such as "delete."

The move is part of the board's efforts to comply with Quebec's language laws. It must obtain a francization certificate from the Office québécois de la langue française and to do so, it has had to make several changes.

'We've been working on obtaining that certificate for the last five years,'' said the board's director-general, Stephen Lessard.

''It's required a bit of negotiating. One of the things we've done recently is convert our telephone system to French. We've also converted our photocopiers into French, and now we're being asked to have all our administrative computers with a French keyboard.''

Keyboards used by teachers and students at the English-language board are not affected by the change, but all administrators — including school secretaries, principals and vice-principals — will have to work on French keyboards.

Lynette Golden, who works in the finance department, is accustomed to typing in French — on her English keyboard.

''I've been using the same keyboard for twenty years now, '' Golden said. ''You know where all the accents are. You know where everything is. It doesn't matter if I type on an English or a French keyboard, it's still what comes out, that's the final project. And that should be the concern, not how we enter the information.''

Riverside is not the only board facing the requirements of the Office. All Quebec school boards — whether English or French — must obey the law.

"The Charter of the French language states that French is the normal language of work, and that's true even for English school boards. Keyboards are one of the tools provided by the school board to their employees," said Office québécois de la langue française spokesperson Martin Bergeron.

However, Bergeron said the Office does try to make sure boards don't incur extra costs.

''Generally what we do is check the analysis. We say, okay, you need to change those keyboards. Just tell us when you plan to change them. We will enter the normal cycle, so there is no additional cost.''

Riverside said its policy was to have French keyboards unless an employee preferred English. That way, no francophone found himself or herself stuck with an English keyboard.

The board said it wasn't able to retire English keyboards at the end of their natural lifespan in time to meet the government deadline of five years, so it will remove 100 English keyboards and put stickers on 50 laptops.

The board said the English keyboards will be put to use in classrooms.
