  • To be fair, most threats come in the form of an evasive statement or open question. The rest is left to the imagination.

Example: "If you separate, what is going to happen to your Canadian dollars?"

    Works on idiots.

Who knows what the international community would do? Canada obviously can't speak for them. At most it is speculation (not dishonest).

Currency: most people have no ****ing clue what a monetary policy is. The dishonest threat (we've heard it) is that Canadian currency would be confiscated.

That would be dishonest but you would have to be some kind of stupid to believe that. No?

Divisibility of Quebec: use common sense. The Crees are a nation, the Innus are a nation, Quebec is, the ballots of a polling station are not.

I think the point being this is certainly an issue open for debate. Again, not dishonest.

NAFTA: it's no one's interest to abrogate it. 'It's the economy, stupid.'
I guess it depends how pissed off people are and how the other issues with an independent Quebec are working out. Again, saying an independent Quebec would have to negotiate its way back into international agreements is not a threat.

As does asking a misleading question.

        • You are correct that stating potential issues is not a threat.

It is a threat when it is worded such that the issue is made to appear unavoidable, or that there is necessarily no positive outcome. Political marketing.

            Let's go another route.

If you had to answer the question, what would you like to be certain of that the question tries to cover up?

            • To give you some perspective on ROC attitudes on this issue Oncle, I am relatively moderate on "Quebec" issues. There are many Ashers.

You are badly mistaken if you think ROC will give you a big hug as you walk out.

I already provide an alternative wording earlier. That was a ten second effort. I'm sure with more effort we could be clear and concise in less than 10 words.

The "cover up" is the idea that you can be an independent nation but still enjoy benefits of being "Canadian". You can't have it both ways.

                  I know.

This is a factor for me being a separatist in the first place.

                    I presume this was a x-post.

You want to leave because we won't be happy if you leave?

Should we cheer on your separatist aspirations to convince you to stay?

You have to be aware of the subtleties.

In international law - you can't secede without valid reason.

Quebec needs a clear, democratic mandate to negociate.

If the negociation succeeds, we're independent.
If the negociation fails, we have a 'legal case' - that Canada isn't acting in good faith.

                      • **** all this noise.

Kick Quebec out, get them to stop using our currency, exclude them from NAFTA, and give them their share of the national debt.

Then when they beg to be let back in, do so under the condition of no equalization payments. No negotiation. Our way or the high way. Quebec needs to know its place.

Yes, I'm aware of the Clarity Act and earlier court rulings on the matter. I know the subtleties.

Good to see even the separatists are coming round to it.

The Newfs will be happiest of all.

Quebec separation will shave at least two hours drive time off the trip to Toronto.

                              • What can you do to prevent us from using the Canadian currency?
Seriously? How would Quebec print their own CDN? The situation would be akin to the Euro, but with the ROC having control over the currency. You are right that no one could stop French Canadians from using the CDN as their official currency, but they wouldn't be able to print CDN.

This also means that the ROC could establish tariffs to drain you dry and you'd end up in a similar situation as the PIIGS in Europe.
