  • People still haven't decided to arm the rebels or not. Obviously it was just talk.

    • They certainly aren't responding with any urgency. There will be no one left to support (or arm) soon.

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) — As world leaders meet in Paris to decide what action to take in Libya, Moammar Gadhafi's troops are attacking the city at the heart of the 5-week-old uprising against him. A resident says tanks are moving into Benghazi, followed by ground troops. Rebels are setting up roadblocks and gathering bottles to make gasoline bombs.

        • I'm in limbo over this. Gadverdaffi is clearly a bastard and should go. However the people rallying against him appear to be a bunch of morons. They shoot at airplanes with machineguns, or if they use the proper stuff they shoot down their own. (Apparently the plane shot down today over Benghazi was their own. What was he doing up there anyway with the no-fly zone proclaimed?). I must say the constant yelling of 'Allahu Akhbar' doesn't put much confidence in these guys either. I felt much more comfortable (in fact: not troubled at all) with the Tunesian and Egyptian revolts. I don't know much about the Yemeni and Bahreini revolutions, but they appear less religious oriented.

          Religious revolutions:
          Murderous dictotors
"post reported"Winston, on the barricades for freedom of speech

Al-Jazeera was reporting on this earlier.

It looks like Gaddafi wants to get his armor into the city before air-strikes happen. AJE reports the advance was stopped and the armor pulled back.

Whoops! You need a strike carrier to do that! Whoops! The UK PM that wants the no-fly zone is the guy whose administration GOT RID of their strike carrier in the space of a month!

Libya is right across the Med from Europe. It's a European problem.
              You were right.

Actually no. The UK and France were leading the way and the US tried to do everything in its power to 'shoot them down' until world opinion became an irresistible tide that they ended up having to belatedly join the bandwagon...

Everyone will remember that later on down the line - just like everyone knows that the US is Bahrain's #1 ally...

Your modern German is a fellow who only feels safe expressing his aggression through sexual deviancy.

The Brits are flying some of their sorties all the way from the UK, with more than a few tanks lined up. Longest range air attack that the RAF has done since the Falklands War.

It's pretty funny how now the Arab League is suddenly claiming that they did NOT mean airstrikes when they issued a request for a "no fly zone".

The Egyptian government has apparently been arming the rebels on the down low for the past few weeks. I wonder how long it'll be before they start pulling T-62s out of storage so the rebels can push onto Tripoli.

Yes, common sense has finally prevailed. But the question is - has the resolution been passed in time to save the rebels?
Common sense can be (and often is) nonsensical.

This is stupid. I expect that, eventually, you'll have to concede the point. But we'll see. Hopefully, I'm wrong.

                        • Why is it stupid?

It's all very well sitting on the fence and doing nothing while people die - is that your 'solution'?

It's people like you that gave us Rwanda, Srebrenica et al. We don't even have to wait for you to concede that point because they actually happened...

                          • You want something done, unless something starts to be done. If something isn't done, you take the position that something should have already been done.
You're an excellent fault finder. Safe approach for you.
Let's not forget that no matter your position, it never involves you or your country actually doing anything.

                              • WTF are you babbling on about!?

Civilians were dying in large numbers and it seemed pretty certain that, if unchecked, Gadaffi was about to embark on a bloodbath in Benghazi.

Still, I guess it's safer for people like you to twiddle your fingers and pretend not to notice when the odd genocide is committed here or there in the world...
