Not fair to say all the people. many were opposed but if they spoke out they were labeled unpatriotic. sad. Mob rules, just like this forum.

What is it about the US that when the world actually asks for its help, it ignores it - but it's more than happy to give the rest of the planet the middle finger any time it likes on an average day!?
You're absolutely right about that case. America has a special responsibility in Liberia, and that should be a foreign policy priority. Iraq was a strategic blunder. If we'd have just invaded and demanded oil as tribute, then left, that would be cool. Cheap gas and fewer people dead.

it appears that libya is heading for a long and drawn out civil war, i'm not sure that getting involved, at least directly, would be in anyone's best interests.

mobius, i'm curious as to how you can be against the iraq war and at the same time be for military action in libya?

I'm not sure the Lybians really want our help. I keep hearing interviews where they say it's a local matter. Long memories of past Italian interventions.

It's pretty astounding how, even after watching the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, so many people are chomping at the bit to send in the USAF. What the hell is wrong with you people?

Yep I'm not convinced that it simply will not extend the misery allowing for an extended civil war.

Perhaps. Then again, we tried that (sorta) in the 80s and managed to kill some kids or somesuch. Missed da man hisself.

Even if you could just whack Gman I'm not sure that translates into peace, democracy, [insert desireable outcome here].

This has bad idea written all over it.

This implies that 'democracy' yields a desirable outcome. Until otherwise shown and demonstrated I am wary of democracy taking root. Democracy is a unlikely outcome as the basis for democracy is ultimately respect for rule of law wherein the minority accepts its lumps until it has the opportunity to beocme the majority.

Best possible outcome is minimized loss of life whatever that is. Be it a bullet in Gmans head to stop the repression or a cessation of hostility (although I suspect the Gmans reprisals to be brutal).

Personally, I don't care about the fate of Libya beyond the fact Gaddafi is an enemy of the United States and I wouldn't shed any tears if he fell from power. However if the US has no intention of intervening in the conflict, we shouldn't comment on it as sniping from the sidelines while doing nothing of substance only serves to make us look weak.
