      • I didn't realise it was a particularly exaggerated trait in Americans, although anecdotal evidence would seem to support that.

                    Since I don't know dfg I can't tell if he is intelligent or not.

                    However, his fearmongering (which i believe follows from his lack of fundamental understanding of the problem he is freaking out about) and subsequent refusal to accept the opinion of people who do understand made me think of this "effect".

                      • To be fair, I think the vast majority of DFG's refusals to accept opinion stem from the "Ohh he insulted me, therefore he is an idiot not worthy of consideration" variety. Not that fundamental understanding isn't a contributor.
