The International Atomic Energy Agency said Japanese officials informed it that the fire was in a pool where used nuclear fuel rods are stored and that "radioactivity is being released directly into the atmosphere." Long after the fire was extinguished, a Japanese official said the pool might still be boiling.

Shouldn't be artificially cheap, but too high isn't good for many other parts of the country outside of the price at the pumps. I'm not sure what the feds could or should do about it if it happens.

If the market says the price at the pumps should be high, then people should vote with their feet to other things like electric and transit. The issue is effects of a high dollar, labour shortage, etc in areas that do not benefit from the production of crude.

I don't think we'll see floors or caps or federal wellhead tax.

Officials in Tokyo said radiation in the capital was 10 times normal at one point but not a threat to human health in the sprawling high-tech city of 13 million people.

Toxicologist Lee Tin-lap at the Chinese University of Hong Kong said such a radiation level was not an immediate threat to people but the long-term consequences were unknown.

"You are still breathing this into your lungs, and there is passive absorption in the skin, eyes and mouth and we really do not know what long-term impact that would have," Lee told Reuters by telephone.

Well, that tells me that nobody knows what the long-term effects will be.
