After a largest all-time quake, tsunami, hundreds of aftershocks, basic infrastructure GONE, they MIGHT have to resort to that NOW?

Damn straight that's robust. That's ****ing Superman robust.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

        • I truly hope that the political implications of this do not kill theindustry. We are the cusp of some really good things considering new reactor designs are waiting in the wings. We haven't had a Nuke built here in the states since the mid 80's. The inherent safety of those designs is robust as evidenced by site being able to withstan dbeyond design basis events so far. But they are reliant on powered safety systems, the failure of which is what is evident in the latest events.

the new designs are meant to eliminate the reliance of powered safety systems.

The following WSJ oped while a bit cheerleading does relay the intent of the new designs.

            Wishful thinking.
I think your lost to the concept of not EVER having to leak radiation. If it ever leaks it is a failure. It is not suppose to leak radiation. Any amount of radiation escaping is unacceptable.

No. All utilities have an established and allowable offsite dose permit.

The type of venting described in this situation is certainly a governement allowed exceedence but to say no allowable radiation emissions are permitted is plainly wrong.

One of my friends does nuclear reactor design. He said that many of the designs that have come out recently would not have ever been affected by the same problems that happened in these old reactors.

                • IMHO.
We were promised clean energy without risk. If this is not true then somebody is not being truthful. If radiation has a government allowed exceedance then, I have made up my mind, nuclear energy is not worth the risk. I will not argue for nuclear power no more.

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the reactor designs themselves. The problem was they built it on the coast where it was vulnerable to a tsunami, and the fuel supply for the diesel backup generators were not secure enough and were tainted by sea water from the tsunami. Build them inland more, problem solved.

I can also say, but without any shred of evidence and beyond a reasonable doubt, that if they used Canadian reactors none of this would have happened.

                    • What? Are we deciding that maybe there's a problem after all? Kind of funny in a way.

Brings up an interesting question. Who built these reactors forty years ago for the Japs?

GE built the ones on the eastern coast (the ones we're talking about), IIRC. But the Japanese are actually among the world leaders in reactor design, I think. Canada is one of the leaders as well. No Canadian reactors have had meltdowns, partial or otherwise, and they're used all over the world.

Some cannot except reality that it is really happening. I guess to some they would understand better if the press was to print that the USS Enterprise has a weenie in its warp coil.

If these designs deliver on their promises he is correct. Now any new design has bugs to work out but the thought of not having to worryabout all the powered safety systems makes life a whole lot simpler and more importantly safer.
