  • Why is Atlas shrugging now?

I never read the book, because it was supposed to be incredibly long, extremely tediously written, and possibly in some places creepy (was it this one or The Fountainhead that had the hero raping the heroine and her loving him for it?). Why is this being made? There aren't that many Randroids or libertarians--do you suppose somebody in Hollywood is banking on big Tea Party support, or what? I'm scratching my head here.

    Here's a fun article:

Okay, Wiki says the book has enjoyed a surge in popularity lately...in the sense that it once hit #33 on Amazon. That at least makes this silliness plausible. Except I just read that the novel concludes with a seventy-page speech outlining Objectivism. Fun times!

I doubt they leave that part in. I'd hope not anyway.

I thought "We the Living" was pretty good. Well, except for the weird sex scenes.

Well, the Wiki entry for that makes it sound as though there's more actually going on in that. Also, it seems Fountainhead is the one with the controversial rape scene.

Ayn Rand's Objectivism is a dumb philosophy especially nowadays because of what we know about how the brain works.

It might shake you off of libertarianism if you're an adult.

A friend recommended it back in uni but I just never got round to it.

Btw, I'm not a crazy libertarian. In fact I'm quite reasonable.

I read Atlas Shrugged, The Fountain Head and We the Living when I was in primary school. I enjoyed them at the time. They made sense when I read them. Later, when I was older, I realised the whole philosophy was a crock of smelly brown stuff.

I can recommend these books to anyone who is either too young or too stupid to understand them.

Give them a miss if your not young enough or insufficiently stupid.
