    False dichotomy.

I'm pissing in your thread because it's a flagrant example of a destructive mode of thought.

I'm trying to observe that while this is a low-hanging fruit in terms of eliminating injustice, there are a lot more severe injustices that deserve a much greater level of indignation and attention than DADT, not that being upset about DADT and other problems are mutually exclusive.

I went in to see a recruiter back in January when I was laid off. I talked to the Army rep, and he started asking the routine questions. No tattoos, no physical disabilities, yadda yadda yadda. When he asked if I'd ever been arrested, yeah, back in 2001.

            "For what"

"Possession of marijuana with intent to use."

            "We can't take you."

As of Jan of 2010, the Army was no longer accepting anybody with drug charges.

So because of a nine year old weed charge, I was not allowed to get health benefits, a decent salary, and an opportunity to kill foreigners. All a homosexual had to do under DADT was keep their mouths shut. No one was ever going to ask any questions, and you didn't have to volunteer any information. Furthermore, they weren't routinely checking *******s to see if they were distended from sodomy, or any other invasive checks like they do with urine examinations. You could be as gay as you wanted to be on your own time.

Congratulations on the repeal, but don't expect me to regard this as a huge deal. If the military had DADT for weed, I'd be a miserable little Afghan killing camper right now.

HC, those injustices are being taken up in statehouses (where marriage law is made) and in the courts. This one was something feasible to be done in the US Congress (and was a form of acceptance that many gay Americans thought would be a much longer time coming). And, of course, if gays can be tough, patriotic guys in the army, it tends to make people rethink prejudices.

I'll concede that you could be posting for a cadre of lurkers, or for your own ego, or other such purpose.

On the evidence before me, you've still lost your audience.

That's a fair point. DADT was one of the few remaining gay rights issues left at the federal level. I was talking about beyond gay rights though. Things like public defender pay are much bigger problems I think.

The army has so many recruits they can afford to be selective right now. I read in the paper that enlistment is way up thanks to the recession. I hear it's only really officers they're hurting for.

                      • Huh?

I said "really officers" not "real officers". Enlistment refers to enlistedmen, who are NOT officers.

I totally understand that. I mean, I was in there for that very reason. Still, my point is that DADT isn't that onerous. Keep your sex life private and you'll be fine. If DADT were the rule for weed, I could have enlisted.
