Also Asher, small government doesn't mean useless government.

It's hard to see open-sourced code as especially authoritarian...

          What the hell is this?

Covert, secretive spying doesn't mean useful government.

You share your brother's knack for missing the point.

Who exactly are you afraid of them spying on? I can tell you they're not spying on dissidents. They might try to spy on politicians, but Congress is pretty good at protecting its own interests even if it sucks at protecting anyone else's. So who are they spying on? Criminals, enemy spy rings, people they are supposed to be spying on. Works for me.

Who's more naive, the person who believes that the government can have counterespionage agencies that don't operate against the interest of its country's people, or the person who believes governments can eschew counterespionage?

I've always wondered how many of Asher's political opinions are genuine toolishness and how many are just trolls.

                  This question isn't even relevant.

Do you support random searches of people, because obviously they're not going to be targeting fine, upstanding Virginians like yourself and will more likely focus on Black Philadelphians? I imagine that would work for you as well.

Why the **** would the feds give two ****s about some random black Philadelphian? They have bigger fish to fry than Alby's ex girlfriend.

And why do you think the searches would be random? They'd never catch any terrorists with random searches.

Yes, it is certainly a toolish stance to be in opposition to the US government covertly inserting backdoors into security software that the world will use.

Because obviously only blacks commit crimes. Haven't you been reading your GOP communiques?

When all of the right-wing posters are swallowed by the big government they unwittingly support, who will save us from big government?

Yes, I'm sure Eric Holder has set arresting blacks as the FBI's #1 priority.

I'm sure he's got his hands full inserting backdoors into gmail, Windows 8, and iOS.

Incidentally, the traditional libertarian focus on privacy seems to be misguided. Modern examples of abuse of power rarely seem to be enabled by privacy violations; they are more often enabled by lack of internal safeguards against real misconduct and/or lack of external scrutiny.
